I was just wondering if anyone knew of any good medical translation courses, either on-line or if not in Madrid or London, which is a bit of long shot perhaps. The language would have to be Spanish-English.
I appreciate any input.
Thanks.

Hi Dave,
Asetrad organised a 2-day course in November, so I guess they may repeat it at some point.
I didn't go to it, so I can't comment on whether it was worthwhile. It would be interesting to hear of anyone's opinion who did attend it.

Unfortunately I haven´t come across a translating course as such, but the courses aid your understanding and improve your knowledge of terminology in areas such as pharmaceuticals, statistics, wiriting for patients versus health professionals, writing manuscripts and the guidelines you have to follow when translating/writing documents for drug studies. If you are particularly interested in the pharmaceutical side of things, then I highly recommend joining EMWA. Quite a few of the members are pure translators and translators/editors. ▲ Collapse

Hi Emma and Michelle.
Thanks for the input. I actually looked at the Amestrad one but couldn't attend.
I'll check out the ENWA and see what it's about.
Thanks again. | |

What do you mean by "medical translation course"? Courses that would be of assistance to a medical translator, or courses specficallly on medical translation? I am also interested in either.
As regards the former, and not knowing what your current level of knowledge is, I recommend the ITEC Diploma in Anatomy and Physiology, which I found gave a very good and extensive grounding in basic medical terms. Hi Wendy.
I mean courses for medical translators. There don´t seem to be many around, but if not something like what you have suggested could be useful.
Thanks | | |

I don't know how this is goin to work for you. I think their Spanish would be more the like Latin American version. I am going to do this course to obtain some certificate. Other than that I have been doing mostly medical translation for 7 years now +. What I have noticed so far from the proz courses or webinars is that the medical topics comprehend a very basic or not very profound level. I will be glad to see here something more than just "How to become a medical translator" ▲ Collapse

I'm not sure how serious this course is. From their website:
Medical Translator Certificate
Prerequisites:
Age: 16 (License or other government issued ID with DOB)
Seems a bit young to me. So a kid in high school can obtain a Medical translator certificate! To me, nothing beats a medical background coupled with a translation certification, but I might be biaised This kind of brings me back to this topic, but that's a completely different debate.

Hi Radost.
Thanks for the link, but this is more for interpreting. I'm looking more for translation though.
I've been doing the webinars too and I agree with what you say about them.

I am going to do the translation program. That's because I am due for the medical interpreters' exam any moment now. If you look at the schedule, you will see that the translator's program is actually intended for medical translation. Mitio also has "medical background" classes of different levels, which is similar to what Wendy mentioned. I have scrolled through everything I could find on the net for online medical translators' classes. There were a few more at this price range, but they didn't even have a normal web site, let alone a clear stand on what exactly I could learn there.

Hi Dave and fellow translators,
I came across this thread on a Google search for medical translation courses. Just wondering if you found what you were looking for, Dave? I'm keen to specialise in medical translation but am yet to find an appropriate course. It would be great to hear back from you.
Thanks in advance,
