Dear experienced colleagues, I am setting a rate on my first translation job (Spanish - English). The job is two academic papers (9,359 words/18 pages, font 11) and (8619 words, 15 pages, font 11). I am exploring different aspects of the ProZ site. In one section I see that .08 per word for my pairing is the low end. Does that seem like a fair way to set a rate for this job? I am located in the US.

Scam? Dec 6, 2021

I would strongly suggest that you do your due diligence on the client, as many new Proz members are targeted by scam artists promising jobs like these. The scammer typically posts a counterfeit cheque, sometimes for a larger amount than agreed, and requests a refund shortly after, so that when the cheque bounces, your money is gone.

If the offer was sent from an anonymous domain such as Gmail or a translation is already available online, it's probably a scam.

Sounds like a scam Dec 6, 2021

Sadly, this does sound like a scam (especially if this offer arrived out of the blue with no mention of any preliminary procedure (e.g., "Would you take a look at this and see if you are comfortable translating it?").

Probably best to cut off all communication and move on. But if you want to prove beyond all doubt this is a scam, offer to do the job at the rate of $0.30/word. If they agree to this, you will know that this is a scam, because no one would pay such a rate - especially

Scammers typically agree to pay any rate requested, because the checks they send you - in whatever amount - are not valid (and they are only interested in working their overpayment scam).

You’re right we don’t know how she got the job, but scammers are targeting new Proz members and getting 18,000 words out of the blue sounds very much like a scam…

Whatever the nature of the offer Dec 6, 2021

Adrienne’s question regarding realistic Spanish-English rates has been left unanswered, and she might need some advice in the future, if not imminently.
This is not my pair, but I am sure someone else will be able to help 🤞

I'm sorry, Adrienne, but in your place I wouldn't even bother to reply to such email.

Beware of any job offer addressed to "Hello" and asking "if you available".

Before accepting tasks, you need to ascertain who the client is. You can't just believe that people are who they say they are. Many have been scammed that way.

Unless you can identify that it is a reputable client, based on objective information, it sounds unwise to proceed with this.

You all are a great community. Dec 7, 2021

Thank you everyone for your informative support. It wasn't fully making sense to me yet it is also new territory. I appreciate your responsiveness. You won't be surprised that they were eager to pay. The good pieces are that I set up my business account and I learned what a great resource you all are.
