Dear Colleagues,

I was alerted by our colleague Jiayi's message on a LinkedIn group. (see
below)
I signed the petition and invite all our colleagues who feel as anxious
as I am about the future of medical and scientific translation and
communication to do so.
Do you realize that most of us are 50-60 (even more!) y.o. Who will be

Do you realize that most of us are 50-60 (even more!) y.o. Who will be

institutions disappear?
Furthermore, in the world history, every time Science and knowledge were
tackled, it was eventually ominous.

Here's the petition link :

A sad, bad move Jan 18, 2013

Well, I've added my signature. This is a terrible, terrible move. Translation plays such a vital role in the dissemination of science, and the field is already saturated with poorly trained, underperforming "professionals" as it is. What could this possibly accomplish? Is it a financial issue?

Outsourcing education Jan 19, 2013

This is a logical step for the government of the UK. Why should the UK bother. If other nations need translations of English material, they should pay for the training too. When the language of science was German or French or Latin, did Berlin, Paris or Rome finance the training of translators?

Where else can we go for such dedicated specialised training... Jan 20, 2013

I hadn't seen this before I made a pleas of my own for help.

I am a graduate of the MSc Trans at ICL. The course is amazing, as are the staff, and gives a really good foundation in translation in the world of science, medicine and technology - as well as teaching about translation technology and subtitling. To my knowledge - and I looked wide and far before settling on that course) - there is no other course like it in Europe - maybe even worldwide.

So impressed was I by my time on that course that I even opted to pursue doctoral study in the same dept.

I would ask everybody at least vaguely interested in the preservation of language and translation teaching to sign the petition and help save this exceptional department.

This link may double up on the info given above, but the open letter sent out by Dr Jorge Diaz-Cintas about this situation is available here: http://www.proz.com/forum/teaching_and_learning_languages/241634-petition_to_save_translation_at_imperial_college.html

Please help, and if you can, please send this out to all the linguists you know and ask them to support us too. We have no hope of surviving without you, but perhaps we can move mountains if we join together.

Many thanks in advance,

Justin Sargeant
