Hello All,
A customer just told me that he cannot give doc.files of his website, get them translated and implement the translated file back onto his website; too much of a hassle.
He told me his current translation agency is using a tool to translate directly on the website and so the client has nothing to do, if only checking the translation online.
Do you know any software able to do this and how it works?

There are certainly CAT tools that enable you to translate HTML files, and indeed, you can of course do it manually, without needing to use a CAT tool at all; however, you cannot do it "directly on his site", since whatever happens, you will need to download the original HTML files and then upload them again — and to do this, your customer will need to give you access in some way to their hosting site.

If you are not too sure, you could ask someone to provide a 'bureau' service for you to 'tag' the files, then you can simply translate them as normal, then un-tag them and give them back to your customer ready to re-upload to their hosting service. ▲ Collapse

I have translated directly on websites, sentence by sentence, several times, but every time it has been the website owner that has supplied this and not the agency.

The website manager has to provide you with a code which enables you to login on the CMS.

You can. Not "on his website", but directly on his Internet server. The translator doesn't/can't download/upload any files but works within an editor window that is provided by the customer's server and displayed by the translator's browser or (seldom) by a special software.
Proz, Wiki's, Yahoo groups ... all this works this way. When posting a message here, you do not send a file to Proz, do you?
I've never accepted such assignments. I want to use my spellchecker, my macros, my shortcuts, my tools, my way of work, ...

You need more info from the client but I think it might turn out to simply be that the client uses CMS to manage their website and the current translation agency is given access to the CMS software, otherwise this would seem very foolhardy to me as giving a translator direct access to the website could lead to all sorts of disasters.
If it is CMS you would just access the original content, copy into a word document and use your preferred CAT tool, then simply copy/paste into the CMS... I have done a couple of translations like this.
It's very simple, you just have to plough through several menus (what do you mean? of course you click on that option, the other one will simply cause an IT meltdown because the technie guy hasn't mended that link yet), read through a load of gobbledegeekspeak, click left right and centre to try to find what needs translating, then click on that funny little button - no that one up there, not the one right next to the text - and type... What? you want to be able to count the words? Whatever for? Spell check? but you're a translator, can't you spell? Proofreading? sure, just give your password to whoever needs to proofread it and they too can click all over the place and change things willy-nilly. No there's no way of keeping track of what they changed, whatever do you need to know that for?
And if you miss anything because you didn't realise something was "clickable", well we'll have a good reason not to pay you won't we! ▲ Collapse
