Texte source - anglais The past 25 years have been a time of renewal for Benedictines, Cistercians and religious in general. Within the inevitable stresses and strains of such a period, it has been a moment of grace. There is a renewed emphasis on formation for religious or monastic life in a world undergoing deep changes of many kinds. Throughout this period, it seems that the first editions of Centered on Christ helped fill a gap that required a guide for those preparing to make religious or monastic profession.
A revised edition published in 1993 was mainly concerned with improving style, clarity and vocabulary, especially in the light of the new translation of the Rule of St. Benedict in RB 1980 and the promulgation of the new Code of Canon Law in 1983
This present rewriting goes much further, which explains its subtitle, “A New Look at Monastic Profession.” The substance of the work and its approach to monastic life remain fundamentally the same as in the original 1977 edition. However, two important events have moved me to reformulate the general meaning of monastic profession and to express several of its elements in a new way. The first event was the appearance in 1996 of the Apostolic Exhortation, Vita Consecrata, on the consecrated life and its mission in the Church and in the world. The second event is the continuing process of secularization which is taking place in most parts of the contemporary world. A word about these two factors is called for here, since the book itself does not deal directly with their significance.
Vita Consecrata was the John Paul II’s pastoral response to the session of the Synod of Bishops on the role of religious life in the Church and world of our time. It is hard to imagine a more hearty endorsement of the life of religious institutes. The document combines a keen appreciation of tradition, sensitivity to contemporary situations and the breaking of new ground for the future. In fact the Holy Father’s synthesis, with the vision he offers and the challenges he formulates, has required almost a decade to begin to be really assimilated by religious and monastic institutes.

Malgré les tensions inévitables, ce fut un temps de grâce, avec un nouvel accent sur la formation des religieux et sur la vie monastique, au sein d’un monde subissant de profondes mutations de tous genres. Durant cette période, il semble que les premières éditions de Tendre vers le Christ aient servi de guide pour tous ceux qui se sont préparés à la profession religieuse ou monastique.
Une nouvelle édition est parue en 1993. Il s’agissait essentiellement d’améliorer le style, la clarté et le vocabulaire, spécialement à la lumière de la nouvelle traduction anglaise de la Règle de saint Benoît (RB 1980) et de la promulgation du nouveau Code de Droit Canon en 1983.
La révision que nous présentons ici va bien plus loin, d’où son nouveau sous-titre : "nouveau regard sur la profession monastique". La substance de l’œuvre et son approche de la vie monastique restent fondamentalement les mêmes que dans l’édition originale de 1977. Deux événements importants nous ont cependant incité à reformuler le sens général de la profession monastique, et à exprimer autrement plusieurs de ses composantes. Le premier événement fut la parution en 1996 de l’Exhortation Apostolique Vita Consecrata sur la vie consacrée et sa mission dans l’Église et dans le monde. Le second événement est le processus continu de sécularisation dans la plupart des régions de notre monde contemporain. Il convient de dire ici un mot sur ces deux facteurs, le livre lui-même ne traitant pas directement de leur signification.
Vita Consecrata fut la réponse pastorale du Pape Jean-Paul II à la session du Synode des Évêques consacrée à réfléchir sur le rôle de la vie religieuse dans l’Église et le monde de notre temps. Il est difficile d’imaginer une approbation plus chaleureuse de la vie des instituts religieux. Le texte allie une appréciation enthousiaste de la tradition à une sensibilité aux situations contemporaines, ainsi qu’à des idées nouvelles pour l’avenir. En fait, il a presque fallu dix ans pour que les instituts religieux et monastiques assimilent vraiment la synthèse du Saint-Père, avec la vision qu’il offre et les défis qu’il formule.
