Source text - English In your own community you might have become aware of households with food insecurity. There are two forms of food insecurity; chronic and acute.
Chronic food insecurity is commonly described as the result of overwhelming poverty indicated by a lack of assets (means of living).
The acute food insecurity is usually considered to be more of a short-term phenomenon related either to manmade or unusual natural shocks, such as drought.
While the chronically food insecure population may experience food deficits relative to need in any given year, irrespective of the impact of shocks, the acutely food insecure require short term assistance to help them cope with unusual circumstances that impact temporarily on their lives and livelihoods.
Both chronic and acute problems of food insecurity are widespread and severe in Ethiopia. Drought and conflict are the main factors that increase problems of food production, distribution and access.
High rates of population growth and poverty also play a part, within an already difficult environment of fragile ecosystems where it might be difficult to produce sufficient food.
The fact that almost 80% of the population in Ethiopia depends almost exclusively on agriculture for its consumption and income needs means that measures to address the problems of poverty and food insecurity must mainly be found within the agricultural sector.
Other natural disasters such as pest infestations destroy area-specific production levels and the threat of locust swarms is often present.

Mientras que la población víctima de la inseguridad alimentaria crónica puede experimentar déficits alimentarios relacionados a la necesidad cualquier año, independientemente del impacto de las perturbaciones naturales, aquellos con inseguridad alimentaria aguda por su parte requieren una asistencia a corto plazo que les ayude a afrontar las circunstancias inusuales que impactan temporalmente sus vidas y fuentes de subsistencia.
Ambos tipos de inseguridad alimentaria, crónica y aguda, son problemas severos y generalizados en Etiopía. La sequía y el conflicto son los principales factores causantes del incremento de problemas de producción, distribución y acceso a los alimentos.
Las altas tasas de crecimiento demográfico y pobreza también desempeñan un papel, dentro de un ambiente dificultado de antemano por la fragilidad de los ecosistemas en los cuales es dificulta la producción de alimento suficiente.
El hecho de que casi el 80% de la población de Etiopía dependa casi exclusivamente de la agricultura para cubrir sus necesidades de consumo e ingresos significa que las medidas a aplicar para enfrentar los problemas de pobreza e inseguridad alimentaria se encontrarán mayormente en el sector agrícola.
