เมื่อเร็วๆนี้ รัฐบาลจีนเปิดเผยเอกสารปกขาวด้านความมั่นคงซึ่งแสดงให้เห็นชัดเจนว่า ประเด็นเรื่องความมั่นคงทางทะเลที่สำคัญที่สุดต่อรัฐบาลจีนในขณะนี้คือ พื้นที่ทางทะเลส่วนที่ติดกับไต้หวัน อย่างไรก็ตาม ปัจจุบันจีนยังมีข้อพิพาทเรื่องพรมแดนทางทะเลกับประเทศเพื่อนบ้านอีกหลาย ประเทศ ได้แก่บริเวณหมู่เกาะ Spratly และ Paracel ในทะเลจีนใต้ โดยหมู่เกาะ Spratly นั้นมีบรูไน จีน มาเลเซีย ฟิลิปปินส์ ไต้หวันและเวียดนามกล่าวอ้างสิทธิ์ในการครอบครอง ในขณะที่หมู่เกาะ Paracel ซึ่งมีขนาดเล็กกว่า มีประเทศจีน ไต้หวันและเวียดนามเป็นผู้กล่าวอ้าง

The government of China is trying to close off interest on the disputes with its neighbors regarding territorial water. At the same time, it is trying to asset its strategic power more strongly over the chain of islands in the Eastern and South China seas that have a problem. These consist of several countries that have declared their right to control the aforementioned maritime areas.

Recently, the government of China released a white paper in the area of security that clearly stated that the details of the most important maritime security issues facing the Chinese government, which is currently the area of the sea surrounding Taiwan. However, at the present time, China still has disputes with several of its neighboring countries such as the areas in the vicinity of the Spratly islands, and Paracel in the South China Sea. In regards to the Spratly islands, Brunei, China, Malaysia, the Philippines, Taiwan, and Vietnam all claim the right to control the territory. Meanwhile, with regards to the Parcel islands, there is a smaller contingent who claim the rights to it including China, Taiwan, and Vietnam.
As for the issue of the East China Sea, China and Japan are currently having a dispute of the chain of islands that China calls Taiwu Island or what Japan calls Sengaku Island. This island is in a primary shipping lane and is in an important fishing area. And much more than that, is strongly the aforementioned area is believed by the two countries to have a hidden source of oil.
Mr. Gabe Collins, and an expert from the China Sign Post website, claims that the China’s demand for energy is a key reason driving the Chinese government to attempt to assert its strategic power over various islands. This is being done in order to find an energy source outside of its coastline to replace the energy sources on its land that are continuously becoming depleted. This analysist believes that every barrel that can be replenished by an energy source outside of its coastline, it will reduce the quantity that it will need to import from other countries by a corresponding number of barrels. Thus, he believes that within the next 5-10 years, the quantity of oil production by China outside of its coast line will continue to increase a lot more.
One other possible reason causing the Chinese to try to assert control over various territorial waters is that this is a matter of pride. Mr. Li Mingjiang, a professor of government at the Rajaratnam School of International Studies in Singapore believes that in the past, the Chinese people have always felt that they were being exploited by all of the major powers; or perhaps they would point to a century of the Chinese people losing face and use this as justification for China’s actions. Professor Li believes that whenever China becomes stronger, it is certain that they will have to protect the results of their own advantage in order to be able to compete with other countries in the South China Sea.
The second reason, which was clearly stated last week by the female spokesperson from the Chinese Department of International Affairs, was that the Spratly islands in the South China Seas have been under the control of China. Thus if any other countries survey for energy sources in that area without asking permission from the government of China, they are breaking the law. The aforementioned statement has resulted in several countries, including the US, more closely monitoring the movements of the Chinese military.
In July of last year, the US secretary of State Hillary Clinton that any country that is claiming the rights of territorial waters that has a problem should bring up their case to the UN for deliberation according to the UN’s maritime law. However, Professor Li Mingjiang believes that the government of China would rather solve this dispute via multi-party talks because the Peking government is afraid that if the issue goes to the UN, China will have to concede several of their demands in the South China Sea.
Analysists still believe that almost all of this group of countries in Southeast Asia are glad for the US to become involved in the this dispute regarding the South China Sea, but at the same time, these countries do not want to take sides because the majority of them depend on China economically.

President Obama mentioned the crisis in the Middle East during a press conference at the White House and that the government must respond peacefully to the peaceful gathering of groups of protestors and that there will not be any noticeable changes to their society result of terrorism and the murder of innocent people, but will be able to happen when we have dialogue in which we will use the power of morality. However, President Obama maintained that the US will not be able to dictate what will be the results (of the protests). Nevertheless, he believes that the US did the right thing in supporting the demands of freedom and independence of the protestors’ side and, furthermore, sent a clear message of confidence that change to an appropriate system was meaningful and is a change that must happen quickly.
President Obama mentioned the crisis in the Middle East during a press conference at the White House and that the government must respond peacefully to the peaceful gathering of groups of protestors and also, that the populace has to have an opportunity to voice their complaints. The president of the US has mentioned the lifting of the ban on protests by the government of Iran, which are an example of internal strife within the country because, while the government of Iran has praised the incidents that happened in Egypt already, but have acted in the opposite way because they have used gun fire to smash and do harm to the people who were only trying to peacefully express their opinions in Iran.
President Obama confirmed that there is no changes to society that came as a result of terrorism or the murder of innocent people, but will occur when the people get to together in dialogue and use the power of morality. As for the criticism the US government received for being too cautious in their support of the protestors in Egypt while simultaneously not supporting Mubarak, who was a long-time ally of the US, President Obama admitted concern that the protest in Egypt and other countries against the government that have similar characteristics.
On the same day, a spokesperson for the US Department of Defense stated on behalf of Secretary of Defense Robert Gates issued an official statement applauding a statement by the Egyptian military for being creative. Even though if it is not in accordance with the constitution, the US Department of Defense spokesperson stated that there was very little violence in the incident that happened and that the soldiers could have a stabilizing influence on the situation.
