Russian term

смотровая площадка

Russian to English Other Tourism & Travel tourism
У дороги на смотровой площадке стоит автомобиль, а рядом замечаем тропу, уходящую вниз.

Дорога проходит в горах, а в одном месте специальная площадка для туристов, с которой можно любоваться видом или спуститься вниз.
Вот как эта самая площадка обычно называется?

Discussion

Vladimir Dubisskiy Apr 28, 2007:
Слово vista таки итальянского (НЕ испанского) происхождения, это не только Лингво, но THE CONCISE OXFORD DICTIONARY OF ENGLISH ETYMOLOGY подтверждает. Мой на стр. 528 (1986 года изд-я).

Peer comment(s):

agree David Knowles : "scenic overlook" - very American! Also "viewing point"

Thanks, David.
agree Vladimir Dubisskiy : and very Canadian too! Though definitely 'viewing point' (not 'observation'). And NO 'vista' (here in BC). Here, we have "viewing" everywhere; no 'observation' which seems to be more about 'наблюдение', methink.

Thanks, Vladimir. However, "observation point" is widely used in similar contexts.
agree Anton Konashenok : Looks like every state (or at least region) invents its own way to express it
3 hrs
Thanks, Anton.
agree Lenny Rossolovski : That's exactly how I'd say that
4 hrs
Thanks, Lenny.
agree Dorene Cornwell : or scenic outlook

Thanks, Dorene. "Overlook" is much more common, though.

agree Henry Schroeder : I think we just said "view point" in my childhood, http://www.google.com/search?hl=de&q=highway trip "view poin... I think "vista point" might be odd Denglish, since I get a lot of hits for it on my german computer too, but fewer american ones

I'd say Spanglish ;-)
agree GaryG : I think the term varies around the US but I've seen this expression

In California and the Southwest it's definitely frequent :-)
agree Klipit : Lingvo shows Italian origin of this word

Больше верьте лингве :-) Оно в обоих языках есть, но уж в США-то испанского точно в десятки раз больше!

neutral Dorene Cornwell : I'm afraid I agree with Alexander D about your example; in general this option is less preferred than others here but not completely impossible.

Observation platform

Agree with Alexander D otherwise, but wanted to offer "platform" as an option.
