Russian term
"Зоновое вещание" vs "Поясное вещание"
Russian to English
Tech/Engineering
Telecom(munications)
satellites
Are these the same? I think I've gathered that "zone" is time-zone specific broadcasting, but it appears to me from this website
http://www.sibsputnik.ru/info/tv/timeshift.htm
that Поясное вещание is the same thing. The context that these terms appeared in is a spreadsheet about various communications companies in Russia, and it's from the following heading to a column of data:
"Зоновое вещание" "Поясное вещание" (количество дублей, орбит)
Below this heading are data about different companies' satellites. Some of them look like this:
Orbita 0 (0)
Orbita 1 (+2)
Orbita 2 (+4)
which I believe is поясное, and some like this:
0
+2
+4
+6
+8
which I assume is "Зоновое", ie. Time zone-specific. So my question is, how to put this heading into English in a way that will make sense?:
"Зоновое вещание" "Поясное вещание" (количество дублей, орбит)

Regional vs Time-zone [based] broadcasting
The differenece is that "Зоновое вещание" > "Поясное вещание" (typically). This means that there is no one-to-one correspondence between them, eg one broadcasting (regional) zone can include a couple of adjacent time zones. It can also be the other way round - regions can be at the same longitude but very far from each other in N-S direction so that the same time zone (aka "time belt" in literal translation) can have parts of multiple broadcasting zones inside it.
So, while generally they tend to follow each other the is no exact correspondence.

Yes, correct as written :-)

Note from asker:
Thanks for that! So if орбиты are these: Orbita 0 (0) Orbita 1 (+2) Orbita 2 (+4) then these "orbits" must correspond with regionally organized broadcast patterns, whereas "количество дублей" must be for time-zone-based broadcast patterns, which are indicated by these figures: 0 +2 +4 +6 +8 which indicate different time zones. Or is it the other way around? |

But! I've seen it used as translation for "transmissions". In the same or similar context. It was about broadcasting rights and original (in AE) was talking about the rights for X transmission on the territory of RF. It was also translated as "дублей".
Your choice.
- For "орбит" I'm less sure. Looking at the way the word is used it looks like the name of a concept or even a product/solution. As such, possibly leave it as-is, just call it "Orbit-1/2/3 zone" etc? Similar to "regional zone" except that you specifically name the coverage area.
Sorry to be milking this KudoZ to death...I'll give you 8 points!
