Gary, wouldn't it carry the same notion as "grabbing bear by the tail" (and get stuck since the hunter can't let go?). No irony, this is an honest question.

This is all I can think of at the moment, though I'm pretty sure something better exists.
I am thinking of a quotation from Shakespeare (Julius Caesar):
"There is a tide in the affairs of men
Which taken at the flood, leads on to fortune..."
But I don't think that's any help to you here.
