Russian term

хвостовая сессия

Russian to English Other Idioms / Maxims / Sayings Education
Время после обычной сессии когда разрешается пересдавать и досдавать экзамены (интересует также, есть ли такая практика в не российских ВЗУах).

make-up period

In the US this would probably called a makeup or retest period.

If someone misses a test because of illness or because the test falls on a religious holiday, they would take a make-up test..

Different schools have different rules about such matters

Thank you
agree Henry Schroeder : In the U.S. we don't really have a make-up period in the Russian sense because the form of our examination/testing is different. Nevertheless, "make-up" is definitely right and the Russian idea of сессия probably can't be translated any other way.

Thank you. Depending on the kind of document and aAsker's taste this might be a point for a translator's note.
agree Andrew Vdovin : I like it

Thank you.
agree Mikhail Kropotov : Nice! The only nuance I'd like to point out is that in Russia, students are routinely allowed to make up tests they have already failed (among others, e.g. ones they missed or had postponed by arrangement with the professor).

Thank you. Some professors in the US, in individaul cases may also allow a student to retake an exam, but I gather this is much less frequent than in Russia

хвостовая сессия тогда - repeat examinations, re-examination

***Repeat Examinations***

Students who do not achieve a passing score on an examination, may ***repeat the examination*** one time at no charge.

Students who do not achieve a passing grade on a course examination after two attempts will be charged an additional $150.00 re-examination fee per course. ***Re-examination*** will not be permitted until a student can provide documentation verifying acquisition of the recommended textbook for the course.

Students who receive passing grades and wish to repeat a course examination to improve their grade may do so. This is called ***the 2nd grade option***. The fee for the 2nd grade option is $250.00.

special examination

If illness or some other special circumstance prevents you from attending an examination and your course offers only one examination opportunity each year (in October), you may be able to sit a special examination in mid-November. It’s advisable to keep that period free in case you need to do so.

Alternative: "resit examination"
http://www3.open.ac.uk/assessment/ug/p4_7.asp
4.7 Resits and resubmissions
If your course allows resits or resubmissions - not all courses do - you’ll be offered only one opportunity to resit or resubmit. No resit examination or resubmission will be permitted more than twenty-four months after your course’s starting date.

Also: should this be "special examination period" or some such, rather than the exam itself?
Peer comment(s):

agree Dorene Cornwell : For sure, if UK English is needed, the "resit" example seems very topical to me.
