Discussion

Jack slep May 8, 2013:
Andrew, you might want to check Vakin, A. T., O. I. Poluboiarinov, and V. A. Solov’ev. Al’bom porokov drevesiny. Moscow, 1969, if available anywhere. My R-A Tekh. Slov. po Defektam i Neispravnostyan (Voenizdat, Moscow, 1985) gives "flay mark" for leather (reasonable, since "flay" means to "skin") and "tear-out" for the surface of an item. My 2 vol. Lesnaya Entsik. (Sov. Entsik., Moscow, 1986) doesn't have выхват under "пороки древесины," nor does A-R i R-A Lesotekh. Slov. (Russo, Moscow, 1998). It doesn't seem to be a common
term. Wish I could help.

Wrong field, I'm afraid.
Peer comment(s):

neutral Jack slep : I don't have great faith in Multitran without definite confirmation. In this case "flay mark" is taken from an academic.ru site or R-E Polytech Slov., but I find no verification of the term as applied to wood defects anywhere.
