In fact, when I was an au pair in Milan, I looked after a little girl called Melita whose father was an important young Rabbi. I was told but never checked it that the name was Hebrew for honey. It could be Arabic since the parents were Egyptian and Lebanese Orthodox Jews and really great to me - they tolerated my drinking milk at table when there was meat being served. At first I was quite lost not knowing anything about kosher and thought it was something I'd never learnt about Italy - I am half Italian.

Oh, here in France the Melita brand, usually coffee filters, is spelt with one "t". Maybe it means coffee and not honey.

: We have Melitta filters purchased in Canada and in Austria - both packages have the double t.
