Italian term

A I

Italian to English Medical Medical: Cardiology stress test - abbreviations
Another mysterious abbreviation or acronym. This comes up in a description of a patient's cardiopulmonary stress test. The findings include "A l'ECG fibrillazione atriale. VO2 di picco 18.9 ml/kg/min pari al 50% del max preddetto ... *A I* non raggiunta. [this comes at the end of the report]

I assume that I'm reading the letters A and I correctly. What is this "A I" in this context, and how do we say it in English?

Thanks again.

Hi Joseph. I share your frustration. This happens to me to (sometimes minuscule print too)..."it does your head in". Still, at least you can post queries and hopefully have them sorted out.
Joseph Tein (asker) Feb 4, 2010:
Bad Copies $#$^^*! I'm feeling very angry at the people who sent me this document, which again is a poor copy, and it seems highly probable that the 'T' didn't print properly in the thrice-xeroxed file they sent me and all that shows is 'A I'. I really appreciate the help and suggestions I've gotten from all of you, however.

SJLD Feb 4, 2010:
Hi Joe, I'm thinking the "I" could be "ischemica". A stress test tells us nothing about heart valves so it is unlikely that "aortic incompetence" would be mentioned in the report unless it had been detected elsewhere.

Angiotensin Inhibitor (uguale in Italiano)

Ciao Barbara. Thank you also for your suggestion.

Throwing "stress test" into my original google:
AI vo2 fibrillation "stress test"

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&safe=off&q=AI vo2 fibrill...

The quantity of hits is very high for the complexity of the search phrase and the quality seems to be on subject.
I imagine that if the aortic imcompetence was not reached then the patient didn't have a heart attack on the treadmill because the aortic valve failed, but I'm guessing.
Note from asker:
Ciao Jim :) Thank you for your risposta veloce. As you know I admire both you and your google skills! Let's re-think this, however: My 'A I' abbreviation is in Italian, so the two letters probably don't stand for 'aortic incompetence' ... also, I'm reasonably sure that "aortic incompetence" in Italian is "insufficienza aortica" (our medical colleagues can set me straight if I'm wrong). I think that still leaves the question unanswered!
I've been doing a lot of Italian medical translations over the last year, and have come across a lot of wonderful authentic Italian medical terminology ... such as 'bypass', 'followup', 'pattern di ...', 'day hospital', 'baseline', ... and these are just off the top of my head. Also many acronyms taken from English, as you say ... ICD, PTCA come to mind. Aspettiamo un altro po'.
I also like 'uno stent medicato'
Ciao Jim, and one more comment: you were right about the letters representing the English phrase! As I said, I appreciate your Google skills and also your work in commercial/financial translations ... that stuff puts me to sleep, in any language, within 3 seconds.
Peer comment(s):

agree Barbara Toffolon (X) : Sounds intelligent and the evidence is clear. I'll agree with you on this one Jim.

Obviously, normally you would have to consider much more carefully :). Which Joseph is doing because it's his translation.
