Last week I translated "ricupero e rifunzionalizzazione " as "restoration to a useable condition"
Hope that helps.

agree writeaway : yes, translate the concept, don't dive for dictionaries just to replace words

agree Silvia Casale : Right! The italian word gives me the idea of a restoration to a NEW useable condition..

That would be "change of use", which did cross my mind. It would be helpful to try and settle this.
agree oresterome : That's the most faithful translation (among those I can read here) .. another one would be RETROFITTING ... the Websters Dictionary defines "retrofit" as follows: to furnish with new or modified parts / to adapt to a new purpose or need

Peer comment(s):

disagree awilliams : "refunctionalised" is rarely used in EN and only for really specific cases. I reckon something lighter would work here. I don't see how you would fit either of these suggestions into the sentence?

functionalistic state

func·tion·al·is·tic. (of a building or furnishing) constructed or made according to the principles of functionalism or primarily as a direct fulfillment of a material need.
Peer comment(s):

disagree awilliams : to me, "la rifunzionalizzazione dell’edificio" is a process, not a state - I guess you could restore it to a particular state, but I think drawing on "functionalism" is way too specific and not what it means, which is simply getting it "working" again
