In England, under Common Law, the courts could only award monetary damages. Persons wishing some other remedy (e.g. an injunction, divorce) could not use the law courts, but had to petition the Chancellor in his Court of Equity. From this, two separate court systems arose, and existed in all the common law countries into the 20th century. Now, however, courts can give remedies at law and remedies at equity, but the term "at law or in equity" remains.
