2、英译汉审定稿速度每小时约1200个单词;

英译汉速度每小时约600个单词,相当于译出大约 1000 个汉字;

汉译英速度每小时约400个汉字,相当于译出大约 250 个单词;

1000 为 250 的 4 倍。确实值得商榷。

Reasonable or not Aug 26, 2013

Like jyuan pointed out, there might be an error in the word count calculation ratio.

As to the large amount of text they expect one to translate, it is a test after all. For a high level qualification test such as this, I don't think they expect anyone to be referencing any dictionaries or searching the Internet. You can't expect the student to concentrate day after day at the same level of intensity as that during an important exam.

So I think it is reasonable.

Then again, maybe there's a reason for their test criteria. Could it be that the time needed to translate 600 English words into Chinese is about the same as that needed to translate 400 Chinese characters into English? Perhaps the exam board had gone through an exercise and determined the criteria based on empirical data.

It's hard to believe that an exam board would make a mistake on something like this.

The contents are more related to art and literature, and some might be political commentaries, I believe.

Therefore, it should be easy for a native Chinese to understand such contents. All that is left is to see how well the translator can paraphrase them in another language.

That could very well be, that they are assuming the majority of people taking the exam to be native-Chinese speakers, therefore making an allowance for the translation speed in the Chinese-to-English direction. IMO, the way the test is structured actually makes it more difficult for a non-native-Chinese speaker to score high because of the quick response required in rendering into good Chinese for the English-to-Chinese portion of the test.
