Sometimes they come in handy.
I have well over a million files on my computer.

I've probably forgotten more than I've learned. Once done and dusted, the files may sit in my PC due to inertia for however long it takes me to remember to clean it out. I do tend to keep the files from my regular clients for up to 3 years, then delete the stuff I don't think is important, i. e. most, if not all of it. I notify the clients first just in case.
Since I started using TM, I use WF most of the time so I suppose I have the backup files somewhere.

The older ones are compressed and encrypted, though. For space and security reasons.

I started in the paper era and recycled the paper.
I no longer have a computer that can read 5.1/4 back-up diskettes, I am not sure the 3.1/2 are any better. Anyway, I formatted them before recycling them (a dedicated service/company takes care of that).
Some clients request me to destroy all source and target files as soon as the payment has been made (confidentiality agreement).

....electronically filed one way or another if it weren't for the intervention of a thief last October who took both my current laptop and my back-up laptop.
I was actually able to recover much of it from e-mails dating back to around 2004, but not earlier. But family photos are more missed.

I started well before computers were used, and today only keep stuff dating back about 4 years, though I suspect there is more on cds marked "old files" that seem to collect dust on my shelves!

For the rest, I am in the same situation than Interlangue.
Furthermore, in medicine things go so fast that most of those old documents would be totally obsolete.

* I have been serving that one direct client since 1987, possibly did some 700 jobs for them so far, delivering three more today, so still counting. Had a lot of trouble converting files from Apple II into PC after the shift, and later successively "cascading up" all their PageMaker files from v3 all the way to v6.52. That's for print media. Audio/video files, no, I didn't keep any of them, only the recent ones.
For all other clients, after they have been delivered, accepted, paid for, and generally 'cleared' for deletion by the client, I delete them completely. Just checked, today I'll be deleting some 2 GB of files from recently finished jobs. ▲ Collapse

Since 1995 everything is on DVD. Before 1995 everything (or almost everything) is on hundreds of unusable diskettes and floppy disks (!!!) until I decide what to do with them. As I also started in the paper era, I destroyed all written material when I moved my office some years ago...

I use Carbonite to back-up my files and family photos.
And yes, I have all my translations since I've been using Word (Wordperfect files have finally been deleted).

All project files are being stored on a Memoryy Stick at the end of the year where'll they are kept for about 3 - 4 years. Sometimes even longer when I forget to delete them.
