More holidays than when? I cannot compare translating as a freelancer with any other jobs because it's the only job I've ever had!

I've always been a freelance translator and I've always taken plenty of time off. I work hard, but there's more to life than just work, so from time to time I tell everybody to stop calling/e-mailing.

When I had a job with scheduled hours, projects didn't 'come up' that needed my time on the weekends. Or during the major holidays.
I therefore have found it harder to schedule holiday baking and things of that sort.
And I often end up doing some work while away on holiday.

I take less holidays than I used to when I was employed.
But like Susanna, I take more time to do other things (like going to the shops when nobody does, which saves me a lot of time eventually!) and a bit like Denise, I have been able to live for some time abroad while keeping working, which I could not have done previously. So I'm definitely happy with it!

strictly speaking the question should ask about whether people have 'fewer' rather than 'less' holidays...

I'm not annoyed by your correction, it just made me smile - in a kind/agreeing way.
As to the holidays/vacation time, they are about the same. Whether they will increase or decrease depends on how busy I will be. But it is hard for anyone in employment, let alone for most freelancers to have as many days of annual leave (holidays) as I used to have when I had worked for the Air Force: 37 work days, placed well, so to speak, it was easy to go on vacation some 3 - 4 months every year. Those were the days.

Wanted to say fewer holidays, but it's not strictly speaking true. So no opportunity to demonstrate that I too still wince at the less/fewer issue even if I am completely resigned to it and no longer correct it in others.
Now I can have a project to work on wherever I am. Yippittidoo. I imagine you get my drift even if I don't know how to spell that word.

You could say "less holiday", as in "less time off".

And a laptop. That's all you need. I travel everywhere I want. Find a quiet place and work on my laptop. I usually take 2 months holiday and work at the same time.

I assume we're talking about "holidays" in the Commonwealth English sense (vacations).
When I had an office job, I had a couple weeks off per year, some of which were spent traveling.
Now I have the luxury of visiting friends or family whenever the opportunity arises, or just traveling to explore the world. I still work while I'm away, but being in a profession that is conducted largely by e-mail gives me the flexibility to travel more than before.
