Inleiding
Christelijk-sociaal denken kan simpel worden omschreven als een christelijk manier van denken over de samenleving. Welke keuzes worden van uit de christelijke leer gemaakt als het aankomt op vragen die met de inrichting van de samenleving te maken hebben? Binnen het christelijk-sociaal denken bestaan er feitelijk twee hoofdstromingen, die veel overeenkomsten vertonen, maar ook verschillen. Het gaat om de protestants-christelijke manier van denken en om de rooms-katholieke manier. In dit artikel richt ik mij op de protestantse manier.
Uitgangspunten
De uitgangspunten voor het christelijk-sociaal denken worden gevonden in de Bijbel. De centrale boodschap met grote maatschappelijke relevantie is de oproep tot naastenliefde. Dat is geen oproep om de dingen maar te laten, maar een oproep om actief dienstbaar te zijn aan de ander. Naastenliefde krijgt vorm in het doen van gerechtigheid. Bij het woord ‘gerechtigheid’ gaat het om het scheppen van de goede verhoudingen tussen mensen. Hiermee zijn de twee dragende beginselen van het christelijk-sociaal denken benoemd. Maar het zijn beide hoogst abstracte begrippen, die nadere invulling nodig hebben.
De uitwerking van deze dragende beginselen leidt tot vier richtinggevende noties:
• Rechtvaardigheid
Rechtvaardigheid geeft de weg aan waarlangs de gerechtigheid bereikt kan worden. Het gaat om de juiste sociale en maatschappelijke verhoudingen, om het goede leven.
• Vrijheid
Het uitgangspunt “je naaste liefhebben als jezelf” heeft alleen maar zin als je vrij bent, waarbij jouw vrijheid samenhangt met die van de ander en wordt daardoor begrensd.
• Rentmeesterschap
De opdracht van de mens tot het beheren, bewerken en bewaren van deze wereld ligt in de scheppingsopdracht. Dat is de dienstbaarheid aan de schepping.
• Verantwoordelijkheid
De consequentie van gerechtigheid en naastenliefde is verantwoordelijkheid. De mens is geroepen tot verantwoordelijkheid, omdat hij niet alleen leeft.
Bij verantwoordelijkheid gaat het om een moreel begrip. De ene mens antwoord de andere mens. De ene mens staat in relatie tot de andere mens. In het scheppingsverhaal wordt verteld dat de gelovigen God aanvaarden als de Schepper van de hemel en van de aarde. Hij heeft ook de mens tot aanzien geroepen. En de mens antwoordt op die roep.
Verantwoordelijkheid is dan ook geen vrijblijvende aangelegenheid, die afgeschoven kan worden of die op de ene plaats of op het ene moment wel van toepassing is en op een andere plaats of op een ander moment niet. Daarom wordt in het christelijk-sociaal denken gesproken over de “persoonlijke verantwoordelijkheid”.
Een begrip dat hier nauw mee verbonden is: substantiële verantwoordelijkheid. Daarmee wordt gedoeld op het feit dat de verantwoordelijkheid mens in zijn handelen rekening houdt met de gevolgen van zijn handelen voor de ander en het andere.

Introduction.
Christian social thought can be described as a Christian way of thinking about the society. What choices are made based on Christian principles when the composition of society is at stake? There exist two main directions within the tradition of Christian social thought that share values, but show differences as well. These two are the Protestant Christian way and the Catholic Christian way. In this article, I address the Protestant paradigms.
• Starting points.
The starting points for the Christian-Social thought are based on the Bible. The call for charity is its central message with an all-embracing social relevance. This is not an obligation to let things go as they are, but rather an obligation to be actively involved with other people. Love of one’s neighbor is a form of justice. Justice means maintaining good relations between people. Hereby, we mention two most important principles of the Christian social thought, but they both represent abstract concepts and need further elaboration.
Elaboration on these important principles leads us to the following four remarks:
• Justice
Justice paves the way to finding Divine Justice. It is the maintaining of the right social and societal relationships, it is about leading a good life.
• Freedom
The starting point of the principle “thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself” makes sense only if one is free, whereby one’s freedom is dependent on the freedom of another person, and is therefore limited by it, too.
• Stewardship
Man's main task in life to maintain, shape and guard this world is expressed in stewardship. This is called Submission to Creation.
• Responsibility
Responsibility is the consequence of justice and charity. People answer the call of others, because no one lives alone.
Responsibility is a moral decision. One man answers the call of another. One man is in a relationship with another. The Creation story tells us that believers accept God as the creator of Heavens and Earth. He has called Man to a witness. And Man answers that call.
Responsibility then becomes an obligation, which cannot be applied at one moment, but shrugged off at another. That’s why within the tradition of Christian-Social thought, there is talk about Personal Responsibility.
One concept connected to all of this is defined as Substantial Responsibility. It means that the primary responsibility people have to keep in mind is one towards the consequences of their transactions with others.
