Source text - Romanian Se trezise de câteva minute, dar rămăsese întins între aşternuturile jilave şi fierbinţi, cu ochii închişi şi cu braţele îndoite sub pernă. Acela era singurul moment în care lumea părea neschimbată. Aproape că putea auzi sunetele străzii, odinioară atât de normale încât nici nu le băga în seamă: un murmur continuu de voci estompate, amestecat cu claxoanele maşinilor blocate în trafic. Dar era o simplă iluzie, o iluzie creată de creierul său obosit. De dincolo de ochiurile de geam sparte, acoperite cu bucăţi de prelată şi cu pături vechi nu răzbătea niciun zgomot.
Se ridică greoi din patul improvizat dintr-o saltea veche direct pe podeaua murdară şi se îndreptă spre camera ce fusese cândva o bucătărie elegantă, dar care acum era o ruină. Uşile deschise ale dulapurilor suspendate atârnau, desprinse din balamalele care le susţinuseră, cioburi şi resturi de mâncare putrezită erau împrăştiate pe gresia cu model complicat, iar aparatele casnice fuseseră sfărâmate şi aruncate prin colţurile încăperii. Părea că cineva cuprins de un acces de furie distrusese totul cu o bâtă de baseball.
Seara trecută descoperise în ceea ce fusese un frigider de ultimă generaţie două sticle cu apă minerală. După ce scotocise prin sertare şi dulapuri fusese destul de mulţumit de captură: o cutie pe jumătate plină de cafea instant, trei furculiţe neruginite, vreo două cuţite, o cană din metal cu modele de crăciun şi – minune! – câteva conserve cu carne de vită. Le găsise în fundul unui sertar, în spatele unor prosoape de bucătărie. Cine ţinea conservele într-un astfel de loc?
În dimineaţa aceea avea să bea cafea, prima oară după aproape trei luni. Ziua începea bine. Timp de câteva minute se îndeletnici cu prepararea lichidului miraculos, apoi se aşeză pe singurul scaun întreg şi îşi rezemă coatele de tăblia mesei.
Avea nevoie de un plan. Nu putea rămâne aici. Fusese o minune că descoperise această casă, singura a cărei uşă se putea închide şi baricada. Reuşise, în sfârşit, să se odihnească. Mă rog, dormise iepureşte, tresărind la cel mai mic zgomot, dar tot somn se numeau cele câteva ore de repaos. Nu putea însă rămâne aici. Se afla în zona neagră, zonă care colcăia de atinşi. În orice moment putea năvăli înăuntru o hoardă dezlănţuită, mai ales acum, când lumina zilei de vară pătrundea printre obloanele din lemn şi prin găurile cârpelor ce camuflau ferestrele.
Scoase din buzunarul de la spate o hartă pliantă, de tipul acelora care se vindeau la benzinării şi în moteluri şi începu să traseze pe ea nişte linii cu un ciot de creion. Se oprea din când în când şi sorbea din lichidul rece şi amar, savurându-l de parcă ar fi fost cea mai delicioasă băutură din lume. La drept vorbind, chiar era. Dacă ura ceva cu patimă în această nouă existenţă, pe lângă lupta disperată de a rămâne în viaţă, era lipsa cafelei.
Un sunet vag îi atrase atenţia şi îl făcu să rămână nemişcat, cu urechile ciulite şi cu respiraţia tăiată. Mişcându-se cu atenţie şi încercând să nu facă zgomot, se deplasă pe holul lung ce ducea spre uşa de la intrare. Împinse într-o parte câţiva centimetri prelata care acoperea fereastra îngustă din dreapta şi privi afară. Strada era pustie. La fel şi veranda. Fusese probabil un câine. Oftă imperceptibil.
Cum se lăsa întunericul avea să plece. Ura starea de pericol permanent şi de încordare ce-i făcea fiecare muşchi să vibreze dureros. Se va îndrepta către periferia oraşului. Oricum, escapada în zona neagră fusese o pierdere de timp. Sperase că va găsi aici provizii, dar totul fusese devastat.
Tocmai se pregătea să se reîntoarcă în bucătărie, când zgomotul se auzi din nou, de data aceasta mai puternic. Venea de undeva din casă şi semăna cu un clinchet, metal lovind un alt metal. Un zăvor?
Ideea aceea îl făcu să-şi ţină respiraţia: verificase uşa pivniţei, dar nu coborâse acolo. Seara trecută totul păruse în ordine. De ce dracu’ nu controlase peste tot?
Îşi scoase cuţitul din tocul de la gleznă şi, mişcându-se ca o pisică, se postă lângă uşa dincolo de care auzise zgomotul, pregătit să înfrunte orice ar fi apărut din spatele ei. Încet, ca într-o filmare cu încetinitorul, aceasta se deschise. Simţi cum inima îi bate nebuneşte în piept, pompând adrenalina care-i inavadase corpul şi strânse mai tare mânerul cuţitului.
Prin deschizătură apăru o mână micuţă de femeie, care se prinse de tocul cu vopsea scorojită, urmată de un cap cu păr negru împletit în zeci de codiţe. Aşteptă încordat sunetul atât de cunoscut, mormăitul înfundat pe care îl scoteau cei atinşi, dar acesta nu veni.
În acel moment necunoscuta întoarse capul şi-l văzu, în ochii ei putându-se citi clar groaza. Pupilele îi erau normale, umane în mijlocul irişilor de culoare albastră. Îi făcu un semn rapid, ducându-şi degetul la buze şi ordonându-i tăcerea absolută, apoi arată spre bucătăria aflată în celălalt capăt al holului. Se pare că şi femeia se mai liniştise puţin, văzându-i ochii, pentru că dădu imperceptibil din cap şi ieşi cu totul din spatele uşii.
Îl urmă în linişte până în camera devastată şi se aşeză pe scaunul pe care stătuse el. Era tânără, aproape o adolescentă. Avea pielea de culoarea ciocolatei cu lapte şi un corp ca de copil. Aproape dacă-i ajungea până la umăr. În spate purta un rucsac turcoaz care părea plin cu tot felul de lucruri şi destul de greu. Împinse spre ea cana pe jumătate plină cu cafea, iar ea îl privi suspicioasă.
‒ Dacă voiam să te omor, aş fi făcut-o deja, zise el în şoaptă, enervându-se.
Ea se încruntă şi mirosi lichidul întunecat, o expresie neîncrezătoare întipărită pe chipul rotund. Apoi bău, la început cu sorbituri mici, de parcă s-ar fi temut, apoi din ce în ce mai febrilă. Semăna cu un dependent de droguri care-şi lua doza după un sevraj îndelungat.
El îi luă cana din mâini, atenţionând-o din priviri. Nu voia să i se facă rău. Fata îşi şterse buzele cu dosul palmei şi-l privi cu o expresie ciudată de recunoştinţă amestecată cu teamă.
‒ Eu sunt Axel.
‒ Amira, răspunse ea tot în şoaptă.
‒ Eşti singură?
Amira încuviinţă printr-o mişcare a capului ce îi făcu toate codiţele să i se mişte caraghios.
‒ Cum dracu’ ai ajuns aici?
‒ M-am rătăcit. Am fost până alaltăieri cu un grup, dar m-au lăsat în urmă. Au zis că-i încetinesc. N-am ştiut încotro să merg. Seara trecută am intrat în casa asta şi-am dormit în pivniţă.
‒Şi nu te-ai gândit că dacă atinşii te-ar fi găsit n-aveai nicio cale de scăpare? întrebă Axel aproape amuzat.
Amira se scărpină în cap, ȋncruntându-se.
‒ Am baricadat uşa. Şi există şi o fereastră de aerisire pe care puteam să ies.
El o privi în tăcere câteva secunde. N-avea dreptul s-o judece. Era o supravieţuitoare.
‒ Cât de mare era grupul?
‒ Vreo douăzeci. Dar nu cred că au ajuns pe aici. Mergeau spre nord, spre graniţă.
‒ Câţi ani ai? schimbă el brusc subiectul, făcând-o să-şi arcuiască sprâncenele surprinsă.
‒ Douăzeci şi doi.
Hmm, nu părea mai mare de şaisprezece. Mă rog, şi chiar dacă-l minţea, ce conta?
‒ Ţi-e foame?
‒ Sunt lihnită, şopti ea şi stomacul îi ghiorţăi brusc şi sonor, confirmându-i cuvintele.
Axel desfăcu una dintre conserve şi i-o puse în faţă, împreună cu o furculiţă, apoi se aşeză pe podea, sprijint de un dulap, privind-o cum înfuleca fără să mestece carnea plină de grăsime rece şi alburie.
‒ Şi acum ce facem? întrebă ea după de termină de mâncat.
‒ Aşteptăm întunericul. Eu, cel puţin. Apoi mă car de aici. Tu faci ce vrei.
Ignoră privirea încărcată de furie şi reproş pe care i-o aruncă şi deschise iarăşi harta pliantă. Nu era responsabil de soarta fetei. Îi dăduse să bea şi să mănânce, iar ăsta era gestul suprem de bunătate pe care îl puteai face pentru cineva în lumea în care trăiau.
Orele treceau încet, căldura devenind înăbuşitoare. Amira renunţase la scaun şi se aşezase la rândul ei pe podea, în partea cealaltă a camerei. Îşi scosese o carte din rucsacul voluminos şi citea, oprindu-se din când în când şi ciulindu-şi urechile. Dar tăcerea care domnea peste tot nu fu tulburată de nimic.
Noaptea veni în sfârşit, mai fierbinte ca Iadul. Axel se ridică şi se îndreptă spre baia de la parter. Scoase cu gesturi calculate capacul rezervorului de deasupra vasului de toaletă. Era pe jumătate plin. Umplu două sticle de plastic cu lichidul destul de limpede, apoi îşi clăti faţă năclăită de sudoare. Picăturile i se prelinseră în barba şatenă.
Se privi în oglinda acoperită cu o peliculă de praf: aproape că nici nu mai recunoştea chipul tras şi palid care îl privea. Avea cearcăne adânci sub ochi, iar părul nespălat de săptămâni îi crescuse alandala. Nu era de mirare că Amirei îi fusese teamă de el. Înainte de epidemie ar fi putut fi luat drept un cerşetor.
Îşi turnă jumătate din conţinutul unei sticle pe ceafă, lăsând lichidul să-i răcorească pielea înfierbântată. Era timpul să plece.
Când se reîntoarse în bucătărie, fata îl aştepta în picioare, cu rucsacul în spate.
‒ Merg cu tine, zise înainte că el să apuce să protesteze.
‒ Doar până la marginea oraşului, concise el după câteva secunde de gândire. Apoi fiecare pe drumul său.
‒ Bine, spuse ea, părând mulţumită de acest compromis.
Mutară împreună bufetul greu din lemn care blocase intrarea principală şi ieşiră în aerul încins. Străzile erau învăluite în beznă. În aer plutea mirosul pestilențial de corpuri în putrefacție. Resturi de cadavre zăceau împrăştiate peste tot, amestecate cu gunoaie, resturi de mobilier şi haine murdare. Ura aceea duhoare ce pătrundea în plămâni, se impregna în haine şi-n piele, părând aproape palpabilă, ca o pâclă groasă şi dezgustătoare.
Lipindu-se de pereţii clădirilor, înaintară în noapte, pândind cel mai mic zgomot. Spre norocul lor, nimic nu le opri ȋnaintarea. Au mers astfel cam două ore. Axel memorase traseul, astfel că se descurca aceptabil prin hăţişul de străduţe şi clădiri, până când ajunseră cu bine la autostrada aflată la marginea de est a oraşului.
Era aproape miezul nopţii când se opriră lângă o benzinărie abandonată. Uşa din sticlă fusese spartă şi atârna într-o parte. Amira scoase din buzunar o lanternă, dar el o opri la timp, făcându-i semn să rămână pe loc și să aştepte.
Intră în clădire, ţinând cuţitul pregătit. Podeaua era acoperită cu cioburi care scârţăiră sub talpa ghetelor în timp ce înainta spre tejghea. La dracu’! Se opri, ascultând cu respiraţia tăiată. Nimic. Mai făcu doi paşi.
În acel moment, îl auzi. Mârâitul. Ca de animal sălbatic. Simţi cum părul de pe ceafă şi braţe i se zbârleşte şi sângele îi îngheaţă în vene, trimiţându-i fiori reci de-a lungul spatelui. Strânse pumnul în care ţinea cuţitul, pregătit să atace şi înaintă pe culoarul dintre rafturi.
O mogâldeaţă întunecată se distingea pe fundalul gresiei deschise la culoare. Se mişca încet, părând că se târăşte. Mormăitul deveni mai puternic şi creatura păru că se pregăteşte să sară, ȋncordându-se şi ridicându-se pe cele patru membre. Axel ridică braţul, aşteptând atacul. În secunda în care mogâldeaţa se desprinse de la podea, o rază de lumină îi trecu brusc peste chip, făcând să-i sclipească ochii negri cu pupile dilatate şi injectaţi de sânge.
Cuţitul alunecă în carnea creaturii exact în momentul în care unghiile acesteia trecură la câţiva milimetrii de obrazul lui Axel. Corpul se prăbuşi cu un zgomot înfundat pe podea. Ȋngenunchie rapid şi împlântă din nou cuţitul, făcând de data asta oasele craniului să trosnească.
‒ Ce mama dracului faci? întrebă el furios, ridicându-se şi apropiindu-se de fata care înlemnise cu lanterna aprinsă în mâini.
‒ Voiam să ajut, murmură ea tremurând, cu groaza întipărită pe chip.
‒ Nu ajuţi, mârâi el nervos.
Amira îndreptă fascicolul de lumină spre trupul prăbuşit sub care se întindea o baltă de sânge.
‒ Stinge aia, făcu Axel scurt, nu înainte de-a arunca o privire cadavrului.
Amira se execută rapid.
‒ Să mergem să vedem dacă a mai rămas ceva.
Cotrobăiră pe rafturile devastate, reuşind până la urmă să strângă câteva lucruri: chipsuri, gumă de mestecat, două cutii cu bere şi vreo două pungi cu fructe confiate.
Îndesară la repezeală în rucsacuri prada pe care o împărţiseră pe din două şi se grăbiră să iasă din benzinărie, mergând pe marginea autostrăzii. Amira părea ceva mai relaxată, probabil din cauză că Axel nu adusese în discuţie faptul că drumurile trebuiau să li se despartă. Se simţea mai în siguranţă alături de bărbatul înalt, cu aer morăcănos şi dur, decât se simţise atunci când călătorise cu grupul de tineri iresponsabili şi inconştienţi.
Dar bucuria nu ţinu mult. Când făcură următorul popas, două ore mai târziu, el spuse:
‒ Am ieşit din oraş.
Fata înghiţi în sec, simţindu-şi brusc gâtul uscat. O dureau îngrozitor picioarele şi transpira abundent. Maieul roz pe care-l purta i se lipise neplăcut de pielea spatelui, făcând-o să-l simtă ca pe o a doua piele, una fierbinte, incomodă și parcă prea strâmtă ce-i ȋncetinea fiecare gest.
‒ Te rog, zise ea cu voce tremurătoare, deşi în sinea ei îl ura cu patimă în acel moment. Nu mă poţi abandona pur şi simplu.
‒ De ce nu? făcu el, părând sincer surprins. Nu eşti în grija mea. Nu te cunosc. Ai ajuns până aici, nu văd de ce nu te-ai descurca şi de acum încolo.
Habar nu avea! Amira scrâşni din dinţi şi îşi muşcă limba pentru a opri replica acidă. Avea nevoie de el. De protecţia lui.
‒ Ascultă, începu ea, simţind că ȋntreaga viaţă ȋi depindea de acea pledoarie, nu mă cunoşti. Dar nici eu nu te cunosc. Nu-ţi pretind nimic, vreau doar să merg alături de tine o vreme. Nu ne datorăm absolut nimic. Măcar ne ţinem de urât.
‒ Sunt bine aşa cum sunt, replică el, desfăcând una dintre sticlele cu apă minerală pe care le luase de la casa în care înnoptase. Bău cu sete, apoi o privi pe fata subţirică. Avea o expresie disperată. I se făcu milă de ea. Dar responsabilitatea pe care o presupunea acea tovărăşie era prea mare, iar el nu era dispus să şi-o asume. Scoase un cuţit din bagaj şi i-l întinse.
‒ Te rog, zise ea cu o voce stinsă, apucând lama cuţitului.
‒ Îmi pare rău.
Se ridică de pe borna de beton pe care stătuse şi-şi puse rucsacul în spate. Se îndepărtă prin întuneric, fără să privească în urmă.
Nu parcursese nici cinci sute de metri, când liniştea nopţii fu sfâşiată de un ţipăt. Se opri, ascultând nemişcat. Strigătul se auzi din nou şi i se păru vag că recunoaşte vocea Amirei.
‒ Să-mi bag...! înjură el, întorcându-se pe călcâie şi rupând-o la fugă în direcţia de unde se auzise ţipătul. Simţea că plămânii îi iau foc şi că fiecare muşchi se revolta dureros, dar nu se opri.
Curând desluşi mai multe siluete în apropierea locului în care se despărţiseră. Scena era incredibila: Amira, înconjurată de vreo zece sau doisprezece atinşi se rotea în cerc, ţinând în mână cuţitul pe care i-l dăduse el. Atacatorii se mişcau încet, ca prin apă, având în vedere că era întuneric şi că doar prezenţa luminii îi activa, dându-le agilitatea şi forţa letală.
Îşi smulse cu un gest rapid cuţitul de la gleznă şi-l atacă pe cel aflat cel mai aproape de el. Lama se înfipse adânc în tâmpla acestuia. Atinsul căzu la pământ ca un sac cu cartofi. Fără să stea pe gânduri, îl atacă pe cel din dreapta, încercând să deschidă o portiţă în cercul care se strângea tot mai mult în jurul fetei.
‒ Fugi! ţipă Axel.
La auzul vocii sale, Amira se întoarse şi-o rupse la fugă pe lângă el, iar atinşii începură să se agite şi să mârâie, părând un cor grotesc şi ireal. Se întoarse şi o urmă, fugind cât de tare îi permitea trupul obosit aflat la limita epuizării din cauza deshidratării şi-a lipsei hranei. Curând o ajunse din urmă pe fată şi continuară să alerge pe autostrada întunecată. Se opriră doar atunci când din urma lor nu se mai auzi nimic, mârâielile pierzându-se în noapte.
Respirând sacadat, Amira se îndoi de la mijloc, rezemându-şi palmele pe genunchi.
‒ Nu ştiu de unde au apărut, zise ea, încercând să-şi tragă sufletul.
‒ Ce mama dracului te-a apucat să urli ca nebuna?
‒ Dacă nu urlam, acum eram moartă, replică ea mânioasă.
‒ Dacă nu ajungeam la timp, ai fi fost. Zgomotul ar fi atras şi mai mulţi atinşi.
‒ Credeam că noaptea sunt inactivi, schimbă ea subiectul, privindu-l însă cu o furie nedisimulată.
‒ Sunt doar mai lenţi, mormăi Axel şi-i întinse sticla cu apă pe jumătate plină. Bea, spuse el aspru.
‒ Poate ar trebui să o păstrezi pentru tine, făcu ea pe un ton care se voia ironic.
‒ Bea, repetă el, iar Amira se conformă fără să mai comenteze.
‒ Să mergem.
Merseră în tăcere. Fata înţelesese că nu avea rost să opună rezistenţă sau să se certe cu el. Până la urmă asta îşi dorise, nu? Să rămână împreună. Axel nu trebuia să afle niciodată că ea îi provocase pe atinşii care zăcuseră într-o stare de letargie în ceea ce fusese cândva un post de control pe autostradă. Zâmbi prin întuneric. Încă se pricepea.
Translation - English He laid awake between the damp and toasty sheets, with his eyes closed, and arms folded under his pillow. Only in those moments would the world seem unchanged. He could almost hear the road noises, so ordinary once upon a time, that he wouldn't have even paid attention to them. A mix of faint voices and cars honking, stuck in traffic. But that was nothing more than an illusion made up by his tired mind. Beyond the shattered windows covered with pieces of tarp and with old blankets, there was nothing but silence. Slowly, he got up from his makeshift bed, an old mattress on the dirty floor, and made his way to a room that was once a stylish kitchen. Now, the hanging cupboards doors were dangling open, loosened from their hinges. Broken glass and scraps of rotten food were scattered all over the intricately patterned tiles, broken kitchen appliances piled up in the corners of the room. It looked like someone, in a fit of rage, had smashed everything with a baseball bat. The night before he found two bottles of sparkling water in what used to be a high-end fridge. He was happy with his haul after searching the drawers and cupboards: a half-full box of instant coffee, three forks that weren't rusty, two knives, a Christmas metal mug – and surprise! – a few cans of beef. He found those at the bottom of a drawer, behind some kitchen towels. Who keeps food in there?
That morning, for the first time in almost three months, he would have some coffee — a great way to start the day. For a few minutes, he busied himself with preparing the magic elixir. He sat on the only unbroken chair and rested his elbows on the table. He needed a plan. Staying here wasn't an option. Finding this house, the only one that had an undamaged door and that he could board up had been a miracle. He finally managed to get some rest. Well, he had been sleeping with one eye open, jumping at the slightest sound, but resting nonetheless for a few good hours. Still, he couldn't stay here.
He was in the black zone, crawling with touched. At any moment, an unleashed mob could come bursting through, especially now that daylight was seeping through the wooden shutters and the tears in the rags covering the windows. He took out a folding map from his back pocket, the kind one would find in a gas station or motel, and he started drawing lines on it with a pencil stub. Now and then, he would stop and sip the cold and bitter liquid, relishing it as if it was the tastiest drink in the world. Strictly speaking, it was. In this new life, apart from the fierce struggle to stay alive, the other thing he hated most was the lack of coffee. A faint sound got his attention, and he froze, with his ears pricked up and bated breath. Moving carefully and trying not to make any noise, he walked along the long hallway that led to the front door. He parted the tarp that was covering the narrow window slightly and peered outside. The street was empty. So was the porch. Maybe it had been a dog. He sighed quietly. As soon as it gets dark, he'll leave. He loathed this state of constant danger and tension that caused his muscles to convulse painfully. He will be heading towards the edge of the city. Anyway, this stunt of his had been a waste of time. He was hoping he would find supplies by venturing in the black zone, but he was too late; there was nothing left. He was just about to go back to the kitchen when he heard the noise again, this time louder. It was coming from somewhere in the house, and it sounded like a click, metal on metal. A lock? That thought took his breath away: he checked the cellar door, but he hadn't gone down there. Everything seemed alright last night. Why the hell hadn't he checked everywhere?
He took his knife out from its ankle holster and, moving like a cat, and he positioned himself next to the door where the sound was coming from, ready to face whatever was behind it. Gently, like in slow motion, it swung open. He felt his heart racing, pumping adrenaline into his body, and he squeezed the knife handle harder. Through the opening, he saw a small, female hand, gripping the door frame covered in peeling paint, followed by a head with dark hair and dozens of tiny braids. He tensely waited for the usual sound, the muffled growling of the touched, but it never came. That very moment, the stranger turned her head and saw him, with horror in her eyes. Her pupils were normal, human, with blue irises. He signaled quickly, demanding complete silence with a finger to his lips, and pointed towards the kitchen at the other end of the hallway. It turns out, the woman calmed down too, after seeing his eyes, because she gave an indistinguishable nod and stepped forwards. She followed him quietly to the wrecked kitchen, and she sat on the only chair. She was young, almost a teenager. Her skin was the color of milk chocolate and she was short. She barely came up to his shoulders. The girl was wearing a teal backpack that looked full and heavy. He pushed the half-full cup of coffee towards her, and she gave him a wary look.
“If I wanted to kill you, I would have done it by now,” he whispered, getting irritated.
She frowned and sniffed at the dark liquid, with an incredulous expression. She took small, apprehensive sips, and gradually became more eager, looking like a junky taking a hit after a long withdrawal period. Axel grabbed the mug away from her, with a cautioning look. He didn't want her to feel sick. The girl wiped her lips with the back of her hand and gave him an odd look of gratitude mixed with fear.
“I am Axel.”
“Amira,” she whispered.
“Are you on your own?”
Amira nodded, which made her braids move in a goofy way.
“How the hell did you get in here?”
“I got lost. Until the day before yesterday, I was with a group, but they left me behind. They said I slowed them down. I had no idea where to go. Last night I made my way into this house and slept in the cellar.”
“And did it not cross your mind that if the touched found you, there would be no way out?” Axel asked, looking half-amused. Amira scratched her head, frowning.
“Well, I boarded the door. And there's a vent I could have used to get out.” He watched her for a while and decided he had no right to judge. She was a survivor.
“How big was this group?”
“About twenty of us. But I don't think it made it here. They were heading north towards the border.”
“How old are you?” he suddenly changed the subject. The girl looked taken aback, and her eyebrows furrowed.
“Twenty-two.”
Hmm, she didn't look older than sixteen. But anyway, so what if she was lying?
“Are you hungry?”
“I'm starving,” she whispered, her stomach suddenly growling in confirmation.
Axel opened one of the cans and placed it in front of her, along with a fork. He sat down on the floor, with his back against a cupboard, watching her gorging without chewing on meat covered in white, cold grease.
“Now what?” she asked after finishing eating.
“We wait for nightfall. I am, anyway. Then I'm getting out of here. You can do what you want.”
He ignored her look of anger and resentment and opened the map again. This girl's fate was not his responsibility. He fed her, and this was the ultimate act of kindness, considering the circumstances. As the hours dragged on, the heat was becoming more sweltering. Amira gave the chair up and sat on the floor on the other side of the room. She pulled a book out of her backpack and started reading, stopping now and then and pricking her ears up. But the absolute silence remained unbroken. Nightfall came, hotter than hell. Axel stood up and headed towards the downstairs bathroom. Very carefully, he removed the lid off the toilet's water tank. It was half-full. He filled two plastic bottles with the reasonably clear liquid, and then he washed his sweat-sodden face. Drips of water were trickling through his brown beard. He looked at himself in the dust-covered mirror: he almost couldn't recognize the pale, thin face looking back at him. His eyes looked baggy, his hair hadn't been washed in weeks and had grown wildly. No wonder Amira looked scared. Even before the epidemic, he looked like a beggar. He poured half a bottle of water on the back of his neck, enjoying the cooling sensation on his flushed skin. It was time to go. When he went back to the kitchen, the girl was waiting for him standing up, wearing her backpack.
“I'm going with you,” she said before he had the chance to object.
“Just to the edge of town,” he concluded after thinking about it briefly.“Then we go our separate ways.”
“Fine,” she said, looking pleased with the compromise.
Together they moved the massive wooden cupboard, used to block the front door, and then went outside into the scorching air. The streets were shrouded in darkness. The foul smell of rotting corpses was floating in the air. Pieces of dead bodies were scattered everywhere, mixed with garbage, bits of furniture, and dirty clothes. Axel hated that stench, the kind that gets into your lungs, ingrains into your clothes and skin, that you can almost touch, like a thick, putrid fog. Staying close to building walls, they advanced into the night, paying attention to the smallest sounds. Luckily, nothing got in their way. They kept going for about two hours. Axel memorized the way, so he was doing alright through the maze of buildings and streets until they finally reached the highway near the town's eastern border.
It was almost midnight when they stopped next to an abandoned gas station. The glass door was hanging sideways, broken. Amira pulled a flashlight out of her pocket, but he stopped her just in time, signaling her to stop and wait. He went into the building, knife ready. The floor was covered in shattered glass, breaking under his boots as he was advancing towards the counter. Fuck! He stopped, holding his breath. He went further. Then he heard it. The growl. The kind only a wild animal would make. The hairs on the back of his neck and arms bristled, blood turned to ice, sending chills down his spine. He gripped the knife tighter, getting ready to attack and carried on walking down the aisle. He noticed a small, dark figure on the light-colored tile. It was moving slowly, crawling almost. The growling intensified, and the thing looked ready to pounce. Axel raised his arm, prepared to strike. The second it jumped at him, a flash of light lit its face suddenly, twinkling in its black, bloodshot eyes with dilated pupils. The blade sunk just as its nails missed Axel's face by a fraction of an inch. The body fell to the ground with a thud. He kneeled quickly, and he stabbed it again, this time causing the skull bones to crack.
“What the hell are you doing?” he asked, angry now, standing up and reaching the girl, who stopped dead holding the flashlight.
“I wanted to help,” she whispered, shaking, horror etched on her face.
“You're not helping,” he snarled.
Amira pointed the light towards the collapsed body, now with a puddle of blood under it.
“Put that off,” Axel snapped, but not before looking at the corpse. Amira acted quickly.
“Let's see if there's anything left.”
They rummaged the wrecked shelves, finally managing to gather a few things: chips, chewing gum, two cases of beer, and two bags of dried fruit. They halved the haul between themselves in a haste and shoved it in their backpacks, then made their way out of the gas station and walked along the edge of the highway. Amira seemed somewhat more relaxed, maybe because Axel hadn't brought up that they were supposed to split up. She felt safer with the tall, grumpy, and tough man than before when she was traveling with the reckless, young group. But her joy didn't last long. Two hours later, when they stopped for a rest, he said:
“We're out of the city.”
The girl gulped, her throat drying out. Her feet were aching, and she was sweating profusely. The pink vest she was wearing was sticking to her back, and it felt like a second skin, hot, uncomfortable, tight, and restricting her every move.
“Please,” her voice shaking, hating him with every ounce. “You can't just abandon me.”
“Why not?” he asked, looking genuinely surprised. “I'm not responsible for you. I don't know you. You made it here, and I see no reason why you wouldn't be ok from now on.”
He had no idea! Amira's teeth were grinding, and she bit her lip to stop a harsh reply. She needed him — his protection.
“Listen,” she started, feeling like her entire life was relying on her speech, “You don't know me. I don't know you either. All I’m asking for is to walk with you for a while. We owe each other nothing. At least we won't be alone.”
“I'm doing alright on my own,” he replied, opening one of the bottles of sparkling water that he'd taken from the house where he slept the night before. He drank greedily, then looked at the skinny girl. She looked desperate, and he felt for her. But this companionship would come with a heavy responsibility, and he just wasn't ready to take it on. He pulled a knife out of his bag and handed it over to her.
“Please,” she whispered, taking the knife.
“I'm sorry.” He stood up from the milestone where he'd been sat all this time and put his backpack on. He walked away from her and into the darkness, without looking back. After about five hundred yards, a scream pierced through the silent night. He stopped dead, listening. He heard the cry again, and it sounded vaguely like Amira's voice.
“Fuck...!” he swore, then turned around and ran towards the screaming. His lungs were burning, and every muscle was aching, but he didn't stop. Soon, he noticed several silhouettes near the place where he had left the girl. The scene was staggering; Amira was surrounded by a dozen touched, spinning to face them all, holding the knife he had given her. Her attackers were moving slowly, sluggish because it was nighttime. Only the presence of light stimulated them, making them agile and giving them the deadly force. Moving fast, he pulled the ankle knife out and went after the closest one. The blade buried deep into its temple. The touched fell to the ground like a sack of potatoes. Without delay, he attacked the one on his right, trying to make an opening in the circle that was getting tighter and tighter around the girl.
“Run!” screamed Axel.
As soon as his voice registered with her, Amira turned and ran past him as the touched started stirring and growling, looking like a grotesque and surreal choir. He ran after her, as fast as his exhausted body would go. He felt drained of energy because of the lack of food and dehydration. Soon he caught up with her, and they carried on running in the dark along the highway. They only stopped when they couldn't hear them anymore, the growling fading in the night. Panting, Amira bent over, resting her hands on her knees.
“I don't know where they came from,” she said, trying to catch her breath.
“Why the hell did you start howling like a banshee?”
“If I hadn't, I would have been dead by now,” she replied angrily.
“If I didn't get there on time, you would have been. The noise would have only attracted more of them.”
“I thought they aren't active at night,” Amira changed the subject, watching him with blinding rage.
“They're just slower at night,” Axel grumbled while offering her the half-full bottle of water.
“Drink,” he said harshly.
“Maybe you should keep it for yourself,” she replied, trying to sound ironic.
“Drink,” he repeated, and Amira obeyed silently.
“Let's go.”
They started walking in silence. The girl understood there was no point in resisting or arguing with him now. She got what she wanted. She could stay with him. Axel never had to find out that she had challenged those touched, that were lying slumberous in what once used to be a highway patrol post. She smiled in the dark. She still had it.

I am currently working with Babelcube, a platform for literary translators, and I am involved in a five-volume fiction novel project.
