Those who have a roving nature
A new generation of female adventurers set out to see the world in the 1920s and 1930s, as traveling became easier, and as the hardline morality that kept women at home crumbled. They weren’t explorers—there wasn’t much territory left to discover—but “unconducted wanderers,” as Rosita Forbes (1890–1967) put it. And they set out in search of something far less tangible than the picturesque.
Forbes left England to write about China, Tibet, New Guinea, Fiji, Syria, Sudan, and Libya, where she went disguised as a Bedouin, claiming a Circassian mother to explain away her poor Arabic. Sheikhs found her too scrawny for their harems, but as a frequent guest of honor at their tables she was served the local delicacy—sheep eyeballs, “glazed and often semi-raw,” which, she reported, tasted like oysters and were best swallowed in a single gulp.
