Swedish term

motskrift

Swedish to English Art/Literary Poetry & Literature
Om en viss novell, publicerad 1839, står det:

"Berättelsens sociala tendens, för ett fritt samliv mellan man och kvinna som två självständiga individer, var i samtidens ögon samhällsupplösande och framkallade en rad av mer eller mindre hätska motskrifter."

Discussion

Thomas Johansson (asker) Sep 6, 2005:
One might also try "oppositional writing" or "counter-writing".

rebuttals, polemics

"taboo" does not fit in this situation at all. The author is clearly talking about written oppositional responses to "free love" (probably Almqvist's Det går an). That is the taboo. "Motskrifter" is plural.
Peer comment(s):

agree EKM : Considering the word 'hätsk' is used, 'diatribe' might work as well, but would be hard to combine with the "mer eller mindre" part,.

I seem to have come across this expression in a number of contexts ... Anyway, C.J.L. Almquist was indeed prone to attract this sort of thing.
