Bubo Coroman (X) Jul 24, 2008:
Touristic texts are notoriously full of clichés, and we spend our time translating them without using clichés...:-)
Elizabeth Medina Jul 24, 2008:
notwithstanding some ruffling of feathers... ;P
Elizabeth Medina Jul 24, 2008:
:) Really, though, how many times have we seen the "best" answer vetoed, and a deficient answer assigned points. Bottom line, we do our best to assist, and learn much along the way; it isn't about being yes-men, so I accept yr comment,
Lydia De Jorge Jul 24, 2008:
Elizabeth, I am merely stating my opinion. Forgive me if I have offended you!
Elizabeth Medina Jul 24, 2008:
This is not about doctrines of infallibility, it's about language and communication, which is based on consensus. That is your discernment, mine is another, and Isabel will have to decide. Thank you.
Lydia De Jorge Jul 24, 2008:
IMO
Elizabeth Medina Jul 24, 2008:
"Tópicos" here means "cliché" or themes that have already been emphasized very often in the past to the point of rendering them hackneyed.

This is the correct one. "Tópico" as used in literature/iconography is an image that becomes a symbol, for ex. the wounded doe symbolizing the wounded self.

Still taking the risk of getting way off-topic

As I understand your passage, there are a lot of things one could say about Jerez, but the guidebook is only so big.

Even at the risk of deviating from the main point

That's the main idea in my opinion.
