Just a comment

I think that it is an absolutely futile effort to try to find a literal translation for \"не зря говорят, что + поговорка или пословица\"
En English, when people want to make a reference to a proverb or saying, they just use the phrase that I proposed in my answer.
Out of all the answers proposed by other honorable \"Prosers\" only Kire\'s anser is grammatically sound, however the combination of \"it\'s not said for nothing that \" + proverb or saying is not very common

In vain-напрасно(зря), вариант Алекса тоже означает это же,но в вашем вопросе уже содержится отрицание- не зря,тогда,если поставить for nothing получается,что зря,так как в aнглийском не может быть два отрицания (not & nothing)в одном предложении,а смысл требует. Можно и так:
This saying isn't unjust- так мы избегаем повторения,хотя unjust-это тоже несправедливое,неверное в переводе,но там нет прямого отрицания в англ.переводе.Правда,это больше устное выражение.

This is NOT a double negative, but then this is so basic that there's no need to dwell on it.

Actually it was not an answer, I just wanted to support Alex. I get upset when people place wrong \"disagrees\",insist on them and do not even listen to native speakers. Is it bad manners to say \"sorry, you are wrong\" and explain why? I don\'t think so.
