Japanese term

落差

Japanese to English Other Tourism & Travel Waterfall description
高さ5m、幅30m、湧水量は、一日約5万tにも及ぶ。この滝は、落差26m、幅11mの名瀑。

A description of water flowing from a spring has these sentences. Just wondering what the difference is between 高さ and 落差? Also any suggestions as to why there are two width measurements (幅)? Thanks!

Discussion

Sarah Nakagawa Jun 26, 2017:
it means total height from bottom to top of the waterfall
Port City Jun 12, 2017:
「高さ」や「落差」と「幅」は滝のことですが、湧水量は泉のことなので、文章が間違っていると思います。泉や、別の滝のことを書いていて、編集途中であやまって、ふたつの場所のことが繋がってしまったのかもしれません。

total height

落差 means total height from the very top to the very bottom that in most cases is longer than the interrupted plunge. I would guess this is referring to two separate locations and the 26 m and 11 m are for a separate waterfall.

(Unless 高さ is referring to the height of the elevation or plunge/freefall which is unlikely.)

height

落差=height between the top and the bottom of a waterfall
This is not the "elevation" of the waterfall located. It is how long water travels from the top to the bottom.
Note from asker:
Thank you. What I am not sure about is what is the best term to use to explain how the waterfall has a height of both 5m and 26m?高さ5m 落差26m as well as two different widths.

agree YNishi : Even though the 2nd sentence says "this waterfall," it is located in a different area from the spring described in the 1st sentence. http://www.akita-gt.org/walk/greentourism/yuri-model.html
