I'm not a skiier so maybe that is the problem.
I found "strengthening" for consolidamento in a subject related glossary. I was wondering whether this would be better termed as compacting or whether there is a still better way to say it.
A couple of the sentences where it comes up:
Le situazioni più critiche sono dovute al minor consolidamento della neve nelle ore pomeridiane
La neve fresca non è ancora consolidata con la neve sottostante a causa della presenza dello strato debole ci brina di superficie.

solidification of the snow
As being a skiier myself, the snow should be hard or solidified enough to provide a good skiing condition. This solidification is same as il consolidamento della lava, solidification of lava.

compaction
I have translated a few meteorological texts, and the increased density of settled snow is technically called "compaction", so you might want to use this term and its variants (to compact, compacting...).

hardening of the snow
admittedly doesn't get all that many Ghits, but i've always heard it referred to in this way.

Note from asker:
Thanks Paul. I think this too would be suitable in many situations. |
