Italian term

barlonga

Italian to English Tech/Engineering Architecture Benedictine Abbey in Murbach

Discussion

toasty Jul 22, 2015:
yes but once the onlooker rotates 90 degrees... :) It seems the point of reference would be the nave, meaning the sides that run crosswise to it. In either case, I think oblong or barlong would work, since oblong simply means a rectangle that is not square, depending on the audience
Lisa Jane Jul 22, 2015:
plus large que longue so if a rectangular shape, say width 20m and length 10m whereby the 20m is facing the onlooker not the 10m :)
Lisa Jane Jul 22, 2015:
oblong seems to be the opposite to barlong according to the point of reference. Barlong from the Latin Bislong is an area twice as wide as it is long...its all very confusing but as it appears as an architectural term I would use barlong

ahh excellent - thank you Lisa that is a great link!
Mairi-Claire Hamill (asker) Jul 22, 2015:
Ahh yes thank you - barlong in French is oblong - that would certainly fit the bill - well done!
toasty Jul 22, 2015:
rectangular vaults I'm not entirely sure, but this seems to be a term used more in Spanish than Italian. Could it possibly mean ribbed vaults that are rectangular but not square, ie longer than wide.
Marco Solinas Jul 22, 2015:
French connection I do not know if this helps: the word "barlong" exists in French. It indicates an elongated rectangular shape. See: http://www.linternaute.com/dictionnaire/fr/definition/barlon...

"Oblong", maybe?

also it seems that in a barlong plan the longest side is presented facing the onlooker so to speak

it seems also that 'oblong' is considered its antonym-probably for the opposite way it is facing I guess

oblong or transverse

It does seem to be a Spaish term but not very well used. However there are a few hints. Not sure you want to translate it. Maybe use the original and put "oblong" in brackets?
