Feuerzangbowle

German to English Marketing Cooking / Culinary warme Getränke
I'm taking some British train buffs round the Christkindlesmarkt in Nuremberg on Monday and I'm sure we'll bump into one of those stalls selling Glühwein, various types of punch and ***Feuerzangbowle***. There seem to be several possible English expressions for this "Gesöff", so what do the KudoZ experts think is the best translation I can use to impress the tourists?

British Diana (asker) Dec 8, 2009:
Brückentag BTW : Just found out why so many Italians were in Germany yesterday - there was a public holiday in Italy today so they were taking advantage of a bridging day short break.
British Diana (asker) Dec 8, 2009:
italian version? Armed with all this information I was able to pack a professional punch (sorry, couldn't resist it ! ) at my guiding assignment yesterday at the Christkindlesmarkt. For some reason 99% of the other tourists seemed to be Italian, so I could have done with the word in that language, too. Thanks again and cheers!
British Diana (asker) Dec 5, 2009:
Oops! Sorry , it is of course Feuerzangenbowle- but when I hear the word that syllable tends to get swallowed...

Feuerzangenbowle is a traditional German alcoholic drink, often part of a Christmas or New Year's Eve tradition. The name translates literally as "fire-tongs punch". It is a traditional drink of the Studentenverbindung fraternities who in the 19th century also called it Krambambuli as the red colour is reminiscent of an eponymous cherry liqueur from Danzig.

In Germanic culture, punch (or Punsch in German) refers to a mixture of several fruit juices and spices, often with wine or liquor added. Punch is popular in Germany, as well as with many Germans who emigrated to America. The traditional German Christmas often includes a Feuerzangenbowle ("Burnt Punch" or, literally, "Fire Tongs Bowl"). This is a punch made from red wine and flaming rum, poured over a Zuckerhut ("sugar hat"), a large conical sugar cube placed on the "Feuerzange" which supports it above the bowl.

agree Michele Johnson : If it were me, I would probably simply call it "a kind of flaming punch". At the market, do you not get your own individual Feuerzangentasse which you light on fire yourself? / Yes, plus burnt sounds kind of unappealing.

Yes, I like flaming punch. Gets the point across better.

The Drink, the Movie, the Cult

Here is a very concise but interesting overview from the BBC about "the Drink, the Movie, the Cult" that is the Feuerzangenbowle (just for some background knowledge which might come in handy):

And this is the the Nürnberger Feuerzangenbowle - just round the corner from the Christkindlesmarkt: http://www.nuernberger-feuerzangenbowle.de/?q=impressionen

PS:
Enjoy your tour round the market, Diana. In a couple of weeks I will be there myself (unless BA staff decide to go on strike!) for my Christmas holidays back home.

And funnily enough, this very moment I am just getting ready to go to tonight's annual Feuerzangenbowle party organised by an expat friend here in the UK.
Note from asker:
Well then, Thomas, you will have first-hand (or do I mean first-palate) information for me by tomorrow, great !
