German term
über der Eingabemaske
German to English
Tech/Engineering
Computers: Systems, Networks
GUIs
Context:
Wenn ..., erhalten Sie eine entsprechende Meldung über der Eingabemaske.
I'm not too sure about how to interpret this. Earlier on in the same document it twice said:
Eine entsprechende Meldung wird oberhalb der Eingabemaske angezeigt, which I took to mean that "A connection status message is displayed above the input dialog", but "über der Eingabemaske" seems to suggest an alert/message prompt that pops up to display the error message (in this instance).

An Eingabemaske is basically an electronic form on which information is requested and fields "filled in" by the user.

to d_williams: I would definitely say vertically above, though this too is vague. It could indeed be a pop-up window.

Can't you just say: "The relevant message appears above the input mask"?

Note from asker:
The question is, does oberhalb/über mean vertically above (higher up on the screen) or in a popup (overlapping the input dialog)? |

: Oberhalb I agree would be literally vertically above, but wouldn't over have the same degree of ambiguity as über?

I'm not sure. To me, "over" would *tend* to indicate that it's a pop-up. But then knowing how sloppily some computer people write, our "über" could mean anything!
