German term

optischer Umbau

Context:

Optischer Umbau in eine Bf 109 E-4 durch Battle of Britain Movie Production

The meaning is obvious, but is there a specific technical term for this type of conversion?

Discussion

Derek Gill Franßen May 27, 2009:
I'm glad... ...you were able to find a suitable translation. :)
David Williams (asker) May 27, 2009:
Cosmetic looks better This seems a more reliable example, even if it is about a different aircraft:<br>http://forum.keypublishing.co.uk/archive/index.php?t-35877.h...
Derek Gill Franßen May 27, 2009:
Unfortunately... ...that is so often the case, as you well know. /sigh
David Williams (asker) May 27, 2009:
Also the English in the text quoted leaves a lot to be desired!
Derek Gill Franßen May 27, 2009:
I can see it being used, but... ...it doesn't really match the definition of the word "optical" provided by most dictionaries (also see http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/optical ). I would still opt for "cosmetic whatever," since that is what it 'really' is. ;-P
Christopher Fitzsimons May 27, 2009:
I see! So it was a compromise between our two answers; optical and conversion!
David Williams (asker) May 27, 2009:
"optically converted" In fact, the term "optically converted" is used, e.g.:

"it was purchased for the "Battle of Britain" movie and optically converted into a Bf 109 E-4"

neutral Christopher Fitzsimons : Thanks for your comment. By optical I meant superficial. Perhaps a compromise would be the best translation; cosmetic reconstruction?

Optical (re)construction

Hope it helps...
Peer comment(s):

neutral Derek Gill Franßen : ...(neutral because I also offered an answer and am thus biased, but) this has nothing to do with the ability to see nor does it relate (directly) to light (cf. http://dictionary.cambridge.org/define.asp?key=55757&dict=CA... ).
