More recently in 1992 the Treaty of Maastricht was ratified. Until 1992 judicial co-operation meant judicial assistance: the concept was a co-operation of judiciary of the different member states in the performance of the national proceedings of the member states (e.g. serving a writ of summons to a foreign defendant).
