The problem:
I worked with Windows 98 till some days ago and Internet 6 worked O.K. Then I had some problems ending with an error which sais "Iexplorer causes a damage in ...files" and will close...". It does not open anymore. I assume it is something with the System on my computer.
Then I used my other harddisk with Windos ME.
With this one I have Internet 5.5 which does not work properly: some pages I can not open (e.G Hotmail - white page),Lycos,or only partially open (Yahoo I can open, read mails, but I can not compose and I can not manage the Inbox in order to delete messages).I tried to update to Internet 6 and it does not work.It sais something about a DNS error and can not access the server of the provider (T-Online).
I tried to install and use T-Online5 (which includes Internet 6) and it does not work.
The only browser which I can use seems to be Internet 5.5 but I would like at least to repair it.
I tried to do it, going to "Software" on the Control Panel as I could once do with Internet 6 (on Windows 98). It does not appear on this list and finally I tried to put in "Run" some sort of programming formula which I found on Internet, for maintenance. It opens that windows which asks if you want to repair, or add components a.s.o, but "repair" is not accessable and when I tried with "add components" It started the setup but suddenly stoped and told me something about proxyserver which I donn't understand. The same thing is happening when I try to setup ie5.5 (or 6). There is some problem about a proxyserver and the setup breaks up.
Do you have any idea what I could do? Is it about Win ME? What is this problem with the proxyserver? The one of the provider (T-Online) or some other one?
Please help me.
Thank you,
Ruxi

what is this "Internet 5.5" ("Internet 6") do you speak about?
I have never heard about something like this.
Do you mean "Internet Explorer" ver.5.5 and 6, respectively?

Internet Explorer contains so many security bugs, that even the biggest Internet Security Company CERT recommends to use Opera or Mozilla instead.
I use Opera and can say that it is far better than IE. You can download it for free from Opera website. In free version you'll have to live with some banner ads, but they are not too annoying.

but for some things, such as online banking, IE is the only browser supported. Also make sure you have an anti-virus programme and spyware protection (haven't got the links - Google for AVG Anti-Virus and Spybot search and destroy - both are free programmes you can download). Your problem may arise from viruses/trojans or spyware. These programmes will sort this out for you. ▲ Collapse

If IE is dead or badly damaged, the solution is to uninstall it and install it again.
Although I would change browser.
I've switched from IE to Firefox for EVERYTHING (even online banking) and it works perfectly well.
It's also free and you can import all your favourites and settings from your IE.
Cheers,

Ruxi,
If you care about reliability and security, dump Internet Explorer. Get Mozilla, Firefox, Netscape or Opera.
Most German banks probably now support other browsers. Mine (Citibank and Kölner Bank) both do. If your bank doesn't, switch to a bank that cares about reliability and security.

Thank you for the answers.
For Natalie: yes, I meant Internet Explorer.
For the others: the problem is Windows ME seems not to support any other browser. I tried with Netscape too and it didn't work. It couldn't find the server of the provider.
Windows update I have also tried: it showed me the list which included IE6, I tried to use it and it didn't work.
The only solution would be somebody expert to look at it...
Thank you anyway,

Perhaps your firewall settings (if you use one) are set too high.
