I like where I am Dec 10, 2013

But there is always room to grow and improve. I am much happier translating than I was building cabinets.

I'm quite happy where I am Dec 10, 2013

And, like Triston, I have no intention of resting on my laurels for a long time to come. There's always room for improvement.

However, if you were to ask me what I'm not satisfied with -- apart from the economy, that is -- that's a completely different matter. I'd need a lot more space than that provided by this poll.

but I find it sad that so many seem to be unhappy with their career - well, you are the only one who can do anything about it! Just do it!

I've been translating for nearly 20 years now and cannot imagine doing any other job, apart from maybe being a SF and F book proofreader!!
Too lazy, old and plump to catch a millionaire

I was an engine fitter in the RAF in 1951 when I saw a call for volunteers to learn Russian. I have much preferred a linguistic career to an engineering one, though engineering knowledge comes in handy too.

and since starting as self-employed in this profession I've had a couple of interesting offers to do other things - so it is nice to know I have some transferable, marketable skills should that ever change - but I don't think it will anytime soon.

Also, it goes without saying after 10 years freelance - anything else I undertook would have be on a freelance/contractor basis, I think.

To a point Dec 10, 2013

I still secretly yearn to resume my former life as an international man of mystery, have another number one single and add to my collection of Olympic medals.

Realistically, though, I think I'd better concentrate on the Nobel Prize.

Love it! Dec 10, 2013

I really love working as a translator, there's always something new to learn! Any time I start talking half-way knowledgeably on anything, he rolls his eyes and says "Don't tell me, you translated a book on that"

like your sense of humour, must be living with the Welsh that does it
seriously though, just read that you lectured at U of S, that is where I did my MA, small world!
I don't yearn for my former life as a contorsionist

Not really Dec 10, 2013

I'm not complaining because it pretty much suits my lifestyle, but it's not exactly a "career" is it, in the true sense of the word?

Are you satisfied with your LIFE as a translator. Ah, that's a different question, and one that I would answer more positively with a 'yes'.

I beg to differ, I love my career

Career:
an occupation undertaken for a significant period of a person’s life and with opportunities for progress
the time spent by a person in a career
the progress through history of an institution, organization, etc.
[as modifier] working permanently in or committed to a particular profession
[as modifier] (of a woman) interested in pursuing a profession rather than devoting all her time to childcare and housekeeping:a career girl

in all respects, what we have as translators is a career.

Thanks for the chuckle, Chris! We all need to see our world with humor.

Career, what career? Dec 10, 2013

To me, the word "career" implies a natural upward progression, with stability, increasing earnings and respect from the community as a whole and from your clients. I don't think translation fulfills any of these requirements, to be honest.

But do feel free to dream on...

Steve K.
