Start a second company, still in the corporate communication and marketing area, but something completely different from translation.

Work more efficiently. In other words, try to do the same volume of work in fewer hours so that I can have a more balanced lifestyle. Spending more time on the more advanced aspects of Dragon Naturally Speaking would no doubt help me to achieve my aim...

Direct clients Nov 16, 2009

I'm interested in finding more direct clients who pay within a 30-day period. I've had a few offers recently from public administrations, but the idea of waiting +90 days to get paid doesn't particularly excite me.

I'm in the second year of an MA in legal translation, so my professional development in 2010 will be all about completing the remaining modules and writing my dissertation.

Clients! Nov 16, 2009

Getting more clients, i.e. end-clients who really understand and value the work of translators, and thus are ready to pay for these services. For the next coming years, I personally strive for working less for the same (or more!) profit. You need to work with end-clients for that.

OK John, I'll take them on! I'm used to waiting ages (on occasion for more than a year!) for payments from official bodies so it'd be just more of the same....

My New years resolution for 2010 is to try not to get irritated by polls like this, which seem to insinuate that we should all be thrusting, ultra-competitive, permanently business oriented creatures "aggressively marketing" ourselves and relentlessly "networking", and just get on with my usual business of enjoying translating and making a living, paying the bills on time...

Funny you should say that, when I read this poll I suddenly felt guilty for not having made any plans yet! Oops! It's too early for me to do that yet

The only plan I've made for next year is moving house. And maybe sending more Christmas cards. But I'd better get started on that one right now...

P.S. John - public administrations, in Spain? :S Payments from them are suffering the most because of the recession. Unless the situation is better up in Catalonia.

Less for more Nov 16, 2009

My aim for 2010, just like every year, will be to work less hours while making a little more and, goes without saying, keeping my customers just as happy, if not more ...

Combination of the above Nov 16, 2009

1. Market my services more aggressively
2. Get trained (DTP)
3. Upgrade my CAT-tool
4. Find direct clients
Lots of plans, but I don't have to think about my New Year's decision(s) any more
