O ano de 1835 não prometia trazer em seu rastro luminoso de cometa todos os sortilégios, amores e desgraças que nos trouxe. Quando a décima segunda badalada do relógio da sala de nossa casa soou, cortando a noite fresca e estrelada como uma faca que penetra na carne tenra e macia de um animalzinho indefeso, nada no mundo pareceu se travestir de outra cor ou essência, nem os móveis da casa perderam seus contornos rígidos e pesados, nem meu pai soube dizer mais palavras do que as que sempre dizia, do seu lugar à cabeceira da mesa, olhando-nos a todos nós com seus negros olhos profundos que hoje já perderam há muito o seu viço e a sua luz de homem do pampa, de gaúcho que sabia medir a sede da terra e a chuva escondida nas nuvens. Quando o relógio cessou de soar o seu grito, a voz de meu pai se fez ouvir: “Que Deus abençoe este novo ano que a vida nos traz, e que nesta casa não falte saúde, alimento ou fé.” Todos nós respondemos: “Amém”, erguendo bem alto nossos copos, e nisso não houve ainda nada que pudesse alterar o curso dos acontecimentos que nos regiam tão dolentemente os dias naquele tempo. Minha mãe, em seu vestido de rendas, os cabelos presos na nuca, bonita e correta como era sempre, começou a servir a família com os quitutes da ceia, sendo seguida de perto pelas criadas, e poucos segundos depois, quando do relógio não mais se ouvia um suspiro ou lamento, tudo em nossa casa recobrou a antiga e inabalável ordem. Risos e ponches. A mesa iluminada por ricos candelabros estava farta e repleta da família: minhas duas irmãs, Antônio, meu irmão mais velho, o pai, a mãe, D. Ana, minha tia, acompanhada de seu marido e dos dois filhos barulhentos e alegres, meu tio, Bento Gonçalves, sua mulher de lindos olhos verdes, Caetana, a prima Perpétua e meus três primos mais velhos, Bento Filho, Caetano e, à minha frente, olhando-me de soslaio de quando em quando, com os mesmos pequenos olhos ardentes do pai, Joaquim, a quem eu fora prometida ainda menina, e cuja proximidade me causava um leve tremor nas mãos, tremor este que eu conseguia disfarçar com galhardia, ao segurar os pesados talheres de prata que minha mãe usava nos dias de festa. Os filhos pequenos de meu tio Bento e de sua esposa estavam lá para dentro, com as negras e as amas, decerto que já dormiam, pois essas coisas de esperar o Ano não eram lá para os que ainda usavam fraldas.
Foi exatamente assim que o ano de 1835 veio pousar entre nós. Havia no ar, fazia já algum tempo, um leve murmúrio de insatisfação, umas queixas contra o Regente, umas reuniões misteriosas que ora sucediam-se no escritório de meu pai, muito escusas, ora arrancavam-no de nossa casa por longas tardes e madrugadas. Porém, como disse, naquela noite tenra e tépida de princípios de janeiro, nenhum dos presentes àquela mesa parecia carregar qualquer sombra que lhe turvasse os olhos. Joaquim, vindo do Rio, juntamente com os irmãos, para rever a família, deitava-me longos olhares, como a dizer que eu não me esquecesse que era sua, que o tempo por ele passado para as bandas da Capital fora bom para comigo: eu via em suas retinas negras um brilho de satisfação — a prima que lhe cabia era bela, a vida era bela, éramos todos jovens, e o Rio Grande era uma terra rica, terra da qual nossas famílias eram senhoras. Distante de mim, tio Bento e meu pai riam e bebiam à solta, homenzarrões de vozes trovejantes, de alma larga. As mulheres ocupavam-se com seus assuntos menores, seus anseios, não relés em tamanho, pois dessa delicada fímbria feminina é que são feitas as famílias e, por conseguinte, a vida; falavam dos filhos, do calor do verão, dos partos recentes; tinham um olho posto nas conversas, os risos doces, a alegria; porém, com o outro fitavam seus homens: tudo o que lhes faltasse, de comer ou de beber, do corpo ou da alma, eram elas que proviam.
Assim seguia a noite, estrelada e calma. A prima Perpétua e minhas irmãs não se cansavam de falar em bailes, em passeios de charrete, em moços de Pelotas e de Porto Alegre. Vieram os doces dar vez às carnes, a ambrosia brilhava feito ouro em seu recipiente de cristal, a comilança seguia seu ritmo e seu passo, o ponche era bebido aos sorvos para espantar o calor das conversas e dos anseios. O ano de 1835 estava entre nós como uma alma, a barra de suas saias alvas acarinhava minha face como um sopro; 1835 com suas promessas e com todo o medo e a angústia de seus dias ainda sendo feitos na oficina da vida. Nenhum dos que ali estavam sequer viu o seu vulto ou ouviu sua voz de mistérios, abafada constantemente pelos ruídos dos talheres e pelos risos. Só eu, sentada em minha cadeira, ereta, mais silenciosa do que de costume, somente eu, a mais moça das mulheres daquela mesa, pude ver um pouco do que nos aguardava. A minha frente, Joaquim sorria, contava um caso do Rio de Janeiro com sua voz alegre de moço. Sob a névoa dos meus olhos, eu mal podia percebê-lo. Via, isso sim, agarrado ao mastro de um navio, um outro homem, mais velho, de cabelos muito loiros, não negros como os de meu primo, de olhos doces. E via as ondas, a água salgada comprimia minha garganta, afogando-me de susto. E via sangue, um mar de sangue, e o minuano começou então a soprar somente para os meus ouvidos. O vulto do novo ano, pálido e feminil, estendeu então sua mão de longos dedos. Pude ouvi-lo dizendo que eu fosse para a varanda, ver o céu.
— Está tão quieta, Manuela — a voz de minha irmã Rosário levou embora de meus ouvidos o sopro cruel do vento de inverno.
— Não é nada — disse eu, sorrindo um riso débil.
E saí da mesa, fazendo uma mesura discreta, à qual Joaquim retribuiu com um largo sorriso que, de tão puro, me trouxe lágrimas aos olhos. Deslizei então para a varanda, donde podia ver a noite calma, o céu estrelado e límpido que se abria sobre tudo, campo e casa, derramando no mundo uma luz mortiça e lunar. De onde estava, podia ainda ouvir o vozerio de todos lá dentro, e mais ainda seus risos alegres, as frases soltas e despreocupadas, não se falava em gado nem charque, pois era noite de festa. "Como não percebem?" foi o que pensei com toda a força da minha alma. E, no entanto, o campo à minha frente, úmido de orvalho e florido aqui e ali, parecia ser o mesmo de todos os meus anos. E foi então que vi, para as bandas do oriente, a estrela que descia num rastro de fogo vermelho. E não era o boitatá que vinha buscar meus olhos arregalados, era sangue, sangue morno e vivo que tingia o céu do Rio Grande, sangue espesso e jovem de sonhos e de coragem. Um gosto amargo inundou minha boca e tive medo de morrer ali, postada naquela varanda, aos primeiros minutos do novo ano.
Dentro da casa, a festa prosseguia, alegre. Eram quinze pessoas em torno da mesa posta, e nenhuma delas viu o que eu vi. Foi por isso que, desde essa primeira noite, eu já sabia de tudo. A estrela de sangue confidenciou-me este terrível segredo. 1835 abria suas asas, ai de nós, ai do Rio Grande. E eu, fadada a tanto amor e a tanto sofrimento. Mas a vida tinha lá seus mistérios e suas surpresas: nenhum de nós naquela casa voltaria a ser o mesmo de antes, nem os risos nunca mais soariam tão leves e límpidos, nunca mais aquelas vozes todas reunidas na mesma sala, nunca mais.
"Do mesmo sonho que se vivia, também se podia morrer," ocorreu-me isto naquela noite, num susto, como um pássaro negro que pousa numa janela, trazendo sua inocência e seus agouros. Muitas outras vezes, nos longos anos que se seguiram, tive oportunidade de me recordar dessa estranha frase que ouvi outra vez, algum tempo mais tarde, na voz adorada de meu Giuseppe, e que repetia o que eu mesma já tinha dito ao ver uma fresta do futuro... Talvez tenha sido exatamente nessa noite que tudo começou

The year 1835 did not promise to carry in its luminous comet tail all the sortileges, love, and disgrace it brought us. When the twelfth chime rang out from our living room’s clock, cutting the fresh, starry night like a knife that penetrates the soft, tender flesh of a little, defenseless animal, nothing in the world seemed to disguise in another color or essence, neither did the house’s furniture lose its heavy, rigid contours, nor did my father know how to say more words than he always said, from his spot near the tableside, looking at us all with his deep, dark eyes that today have lost all their vigor and glimmer of a pampa’s man, a Gaucho who knew how to measure the earth’s thirst and the rain hidden in the clouds. When the clock ceased its scream, my father’s voice made itself heard, “God bless this New Year life brings us, and may health, food, and faith not go missing from this house.” We all answered, “Amen,” raising our cups quite high, and there was nothing about it that could change the course of events that ruled so sorely the days of that time. My mother, in her lace dress, hair up on the nape, pretty and correct as always, started serving the family the supper’s morsels, while being followed closely by the maids, and a few seconds later, when not a sigh or lament was heard from the clock, everything in our house reclaimed the old, unwavering order. Laughter and fruit punches. The table illuminated by well-off candelabras was plentiful and fraught with the family: my two sisters, Antônio, my older brother, father, mother, Mrs. Ana, my aunt, accompanied by her husband and one of her two joyful, noisy children, my uncle Bento Gonçalves, his wife Caetana with beautiful green eyes, Cousin Perpétua and my three older cousins, Bento Jr., Caetano, and in front of me, leering at me from time to time, with the same small, ardent eyes as his father, Joaquim, to whom I had been promised still as a girl, and whose proximity caused me a slight tremor in the hands, which I could cover up with elegancy, upon holding the heavy silver dinnerware my mother used on party days. My uncle Bento and his wife’s little children were indoors, with the black women and the maids, and they were certainly asleep, for this waiting-for-the-Year thing was not for those who still ,diapers.
That was exactly how the year 1835 came to land among us. For a while, there was in the air a slight murmur of dissatisfaction, some complaints against the Regent, some mysterious meetings that took place in my father’s office, rather shady ones, which hustled him out of our house for long dawns and afternoons. However, as he said that tender, tepid night of early January, none of the gifts on that table seemed to carry any shadow that would dim his eyes. Joaquim, coming from Rio along with his siblings to see the family again, threw me long glances, as to say he had not forgotten I was his, that the time he spent in the Capital was good for me: I saw in his dark retinas a glimmer of satisfaction—the cousin who had fallen to his lot was beautiful, life was beautiful, we all were young, and Rio Grande was a rich land, a land of which our families were owners. Distant from me, my uncle Bento and my father laughed and drank without stint, big men with thundering voices and wide souls. The women busied themselves with their lesser subjects, their anxieties, not petty in size, for it is out of this delicate, feminine fimbria families—and therefore life—are made; they talked about the children, the summer’s heat, the recent births; there was one eye kept on the conversations, the sweet laughter, the joy; but with the other they stared their men: everything they might miss, for eating or for drinking, from the body or from the soul, it was they who provided.
So followed the calm, starry night. Cousin Perpétua and my sisters could not get over talking about balls, cart ride, young men from Pelotas and from Porto Alegre. The dessert came to replace the meat, ambrosia shone like gold in its crystal vessel, the blowout followed its rhythm and pace, the fruit punch was drunk in slurps to drown the conversations and the anxieties. The year 1835 was among us like a soul, the hem of its white skirts stroked my face like a puff; 1835 with its promises and all the fear and the angst of its days still being made in life’s workshop. None of those who were there even saw its figure or heard its voice of mysteries, constantly drowned by the noises of dinnerware and laughter. Just me, sitting on my chair, straight, more silent than usual, only me, the youngest of the women around that table, could see a little of what was in store for us. In front of me, Joaquim smiled as he told me about some matters in Rio de Janeiro with his young man’s joyful voice. Under my eyes' fog, I could barely notice him. I saw, in fact, another man clinging to the ship’s mast, an older man with rather blond hair, not black like that of my cousin, with sweet eyes. I saw the waves, the saltwater constricted my throat, drowning me with fear. I saw blood, a sea of blood, and then the southerly started blowing only in my ears. The New Year’s figure, pale and feminine, reached out its long-fingered hand. I could hear it telling me I should go to the balcony, go see the sky.
“You are so quiet, Manuela,” my sister Rosário’s voice took away from my ears the cruel blowing of winter’s wind.
“It’s nothing,” said I, smiling a feeble smile.
I left the table, doing a subtle bow, which Joaquim reciprocated with a wide smile that was so pure it had me in tears. I then waltzed to the balcony, from where I could see the calm night, the limpid, starry sky that opened up above everything, field and house, spilling on the world a dying moonlight. From where I was, I could still hear everyone chatting inside, and more so their joyful laughter, the carefree, hasty words, neither cattle nor jerked meat was talked about, for it was a party night. "How can’t they see it?" I thought with all the strength of my soul. And yet, the field in front of me, dewy and flowery here and there, seemed to be the same as all my years. And then I saw, to the east, the star that fell with a tail of red fire. And it was not Boitatá that came for my wide eyes, it was blood; warm, livid blood that dyed Rio Grande’s sky; thick, young blood of dreams and courage. A bitter taste flooded my mouth and I was afraid of dying there, standing on that balcony, in the New Year’s first minutes.
On the inside, the party went on, joyfully. It was fifteen people around the table, and none of them saw what I saw. That was why, since this first night, I already knew everything. The star of blood confided in me this terrible secret. 1835 spread its wings, alas for us, alas for Rio Grande. And I, fated to so much love and suffering. But life had its mysteries and surprises: none of us in that house would ever be the same as before, not even laughter would ever sound so soft and limpid, nevermore all those voices gathered in the same room, nevermore.
"By the same dream that was lived, one could also be killed," occurred to me that night, in a fright, like a dark bird that lands on a window, bringing its innocence and omens. Several times over, in the long years that followed, I had the opportunity to remember this strange quote I heard once, sometime later, in my Giuseppe’s adored voice, and that repeated what I myself had already said upon seeing through the future’s crevice… Perhaps it was exactly that night when everything began.
