End clients Feb 15, 2011

Although you can usually negotiate better rates than with agencies, my experience is that end clients have wild expectations from a translator - through lack of knowledge about our profession and the translation processes. Sometimes it's just easier to let an agency deal with that....

The ones that give me interesting texts to translate. Some are agencies, some are end clients.

It is not a matter of "categorization" of a client... Feb 15, 2011

I do enjoy working as a translator and helping my clients to make their projects a success from the language side as well. I do enjoy working as a translator and helping my clients to make their projects a success from the language side as well. I prefer working with those partners that value my input to their projects and are interested in developing a long-lasting relationship in which both sides are treated fairly and respectfully.

If these general parameters are met in our exchange I do not care that much whether I deal with direct clients (be they private persons or business entities, corporations or associations) or agencies who care for quality service and do not mind to also compensate adequately for the experience and service shared with them.

I have met wonderful partners in either group and am constantly on the lookout to augment the number of clients who fit this description. I, for my part, am willing and able to go the proverbial "extra mile" for them as well, that goes without saying, and I know that they can profit from my longstanding experience in areas of translation where details and understanding of the sources do matter a whole lot.

agencies Feb 15, 2011

I only work with professional, well organized agencies that are willing to pay my (relatively high) rate. They take care of all that stuff that I really don't want to deal with, such as contacts with the end client, etc. I only have to do what I'm good at: translating.

On top of that, I can take time off whenever I want. I just send an e-mail to the couple of agencies I work most for and let them know when I'll be back. End clients tend to be a lot more demanding when it comes to av

I am open to any client, Feb 15, 2011

As long as they pay and behave in a reasonable manner. Urgent demands and length payment terms do not combine very well, nor do low rates and impossible deadlines. Barring that, I am open for anything.

End Clients Feb 15, 2011

I deal almost exclusively with end clients and I even have personal contact with most of them. That is basically due to my location on the U.S.-Mexico border where most of my work is actually generated, so my market is a local one and I am well-established in it. My situation is definitely atypical compared to others here at Proz.

The ones who don't waste my time Feb 15, 2011

I'm with Adam, Yasumoto and the others who prefer clients that behave in a businesslike fashion.

The ones who waste my time because they "forget" to pay when they said they would are the most irritating. It's nothing to do with whether they are direct clients, agencies or whatever. Punters are either serious or they aren't (in which case their next enquiry is politely turned down).
