Source text - English WHAT IS BITCOIN?
Many people believe Bitcoin to be very complicated, when in fact it’s a lot more simple and intuitive than what most people think. This series aims to help everyone get a grasp of the basics, and over time also present further learning opportunities for those that want to know more.
Bitcoin is often explained by comparing it to something specific people already know, but this is often what creates a lot of confusion. Bitcoin is a new technology that is unlike anything we have seen before, so a better way to think of it is as a combination of a few different things we are already used to:
Firstly, because it allows you to move money so easily, Bitcoin functions as a payment system, similar to bank transfers or credit cards, only a bit better.
Second, Bitcoin is in some sense similar to gold - that is why many people even refer to it as ‘digital gold’ or ‘Gold 2.0’. Think of it as using gold for money, except it also very easy to move.
Third, Bitcoin is like the internet in that no single person or entity controls it, so anyone can pretty much use it as they like. This gives it some very unique characteristics.
These three characteristics also reinforce one another, so they are all interwoven. But more on all of this in the next few sections. For now, just imagine what would happen if you took a big pot and threw in a credit card, a piece of gold, and a hint of ‘internet’ - mix it all up - and pull out a brand new compound - Bitcoin!

1. Summary
Acrolein is a powerful irritant. Due to its highly reactive nature, the effects of acrolein are generally limited to the site of contact; skin, eyes and mucous membranes.
Inhalation exposure to low levels (≤ 1 ppm) causes irritation of the eyes, nose and
throat. Acute exposures to levels above 1 ppm result in mucous hypersecretion and exacerbation of allergic airway response in animal models. Moderately higher exposures may result in severe lacrimation, and irritation of the mucous membranes of the respiratory tract. Death due to respiratory failure has been associated with high level exposures. Long term exposure to acrolein may result in structural and functional changes in the respiratory tract, including lesions in the nasal mucosa, and pulmonary inflammation.
5.2 Acute Toxicity to Infants and Children
The literature specifically examining the effects of acrolein inhalation in infants and children is limited and comprises case studies of accidental exposure, and exposures to multiple substances. The most frequent sources of acrolein in childhood exposures are environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) and acrolein formed from overheated cooking oils. Mahut et al. (1993) describe the case of a 27 month-old boy hospitalized for acute respiratory failure following exposure for about an hour to acrid smoke from vegetable oil burning on an electric hot plate. The child was reportedly cyanotic with labored, crackling breathing, and was experiencing severe respiratory acidosis. Eighteen months following exposure, X-ray and CT scans showed bronchial thickening, massive over-inflation, patchy emphysema and diffuse bronchiectasis. In this case, and in cases of exposure to ETS, infants may be more susceptible to the adverse effects of acrolein in part due to an inability to escape exposure. Children also may be more susceptible to the effects of respiratory irritants due to the immature state of their airways.
As noted in OEHHA (2001): “OEHHA considers asthma to impact children more than adults. Children have higher prevalence rates of asthma than do adults (Mannino et al., 1998). In addition, asthma episodes can be more severe due to the smaller airways of children, and result in more hospitalizations in children, particularly from the ages of 0 to 4 years, than in adults (Mannino et al., 1998; CDHS, 2000).”“Thus, on a population-wide basis, children are more impacted by asthma than adults, and since acrolein exacerbates asthma, children may be more impacted by acrolein toxicity than adults.”
Data strongly suggesting that acrolein exacerbates asthma derive from studies using human tissue in vitro (Roux et al., 1999; Borchers et al., 1999a) and in animals in vivo (Leikauf et al., 1989a; 1989b; Borchers et al., 1998; Borchers et al., 1999b).

Le fonti di esposizione più frequenti nell'infanzia sono il fumo di tabacco presente negli ambienti (ETS: environmental tobacco smoke) e l'acroleina formatasi dalla cottura dell'olio oltre il punto di fumo. Mahut et al. (1993) riporta il caso di un bambino di 27 mesi ricoverato in ospedale per un' insufficienza respiratoria acuta a seguito di un'esposizione di circa un'ora a dell'olio vegetale che bruciava su una piastra elettrica. Secondo quanto riportato, il bambino era cianotico, dal respiro affannoso e crepitante, con una grave acidosi respiratoria. Diciotto mesi dopo l'esposizione, le radiografie e le TAC mostravano ispessimento bronchiale, gonfiore eccessivo, enfisema irregolare e bronchiectasia diffusa. In questo caso, e nei casi di esposizione a ETS, i lattanti possono essere più suscettibili agli effetti avversi dell'acroleina, questo è dovuto in parte alla loro incapacità di sottrarsi all'esposizione. Anche i bambini possono essere più suscettibili agli effetti delle sostanze irritanti per le vie respiratorie a causa del loro apparato respiratorio ancora immaturo.
Come indicato nel 2001 dall'ufficio valutazione dei rischi sulla salute ambientale (OEHHA): “L'OEHHA ritiene che l'asma colpisca i bambini più degli adulti, esso infatti ha un tasso di prevalenza più elevato nei bambini (Mannino et al., 1998). Abstract
Evaporation is a ubiquitous phenomenon in the natural environment and a dominant form of energy transfer in the Earth’s climate. Engineered systems rarely, if ever, use evaporation as a source of energy, despite myriad examples of such adaptations in the biological world. Here, we report evaporation-driven engines that can power common tasks like locomotion and electricity generation. These engines start and run autonomously when placed at air–water interfaces. They generate rotary and piston-like linear motion using specially designed, biologically based artificial muscles responsive to moisture fluctuations. Using these engines, we demonstrate an electricity generator that rests on water while harvesting its evaporation to power a light source, and a miniature car (weighing 0.1 kg) that moves forward as the water in the car evaporates. Evaporation-driven engines may find applications in powering robotic systems, sensors, devices and machinery that function in the natural environment.
Introduction
Despite the ubiquity of evaporation in the natural environment and the wide-ranging adaptations in the biological world that harness evaporation the potential of evaporation to power engineered systems is largely neglected. Nanoscale confinement of water in hygroscopic materials provides a means to convert energy from evaporation by generating mechanical force in response to changing relative humidity. However, scaling up this phenomenon to create macroscopic devices faces multiple challenges: unfavourable scaling of hydration kinetics slows down actuation speeds at large dimensions; small strains complicate energy transfer to external systems; and, importantly, the slow rate of change of relative humidity in the environment limits the power output.
While evaporation carries a significant amount of energy, it involves a slow rate of water transfer that limits the relative expansion and contraction of hygroscopic materials. Because the relative volume of the absorbed and released water is small, the pressure change generated during this process has to be large for efficient energy conversion. Water confined to nanoscale cavities within hygroscopic materials (Fig. 1a) can induce large pressures in response to changing relative humidity; however, these nanostructures also limit the transport kinetics of water. Simply scaling up the dimensions of hygroscopic materials would not increase power, and may even lead to a decrease, because the time scale of wetting and drying typically depend on the square of the travel distance of water.
