Incyte Biosciences Iberia Announces the Commercial Availability of Iclusig® (ponatinib), a new therapeutic option for patients with chronic myeloid leukemia and acute lymphoblastic leukemia
MADRID, SPAIN – 15 September 2017--Incyte Biosciences Iberia S.L., today announces that effective 1 September 2017, Iclusig® (ponatinib) has now been made commercially available in Spain. Iclusig is approved in Europe for the treatment of adult patients with chronic phase, accelerated phase or blast phase chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) who are resistant to dasatinib or nilotinib; who are intolerant to dasatinib or nilotinib and for whom subsequent treatment with imatinib is not clinically appropriate; or who have the T315I mutation, or the treatment of adult patients with Philadelphia-chromosome positive acute lymphoblastic leukemia (Ph+ ALL) who are resistant to dasatinib; who are intolerant to dasatinib and for whom subsequent treatment with imatinib is not clinically appropriate; or who have the T315I mutation.
Iclusig is a kinase inhibitor that primarily targets BCR-ABL, an abnormal tyrosine kinase that is expressed in both CML and Ph+ ALL. Iclusig targets not only native BCR-ABL but also its isoforms that carry mutations that confer resistance to treatment, including the T315I mutation, which has been associated with resistance to other approved TKIs.
"We are pleased to launch Iclusig commercially in Spain—the result of a major effort in research that allows us to offer a new treatment for the CML or Ph+ ALL patient population who until now have had limited treatment options and an often poor prognosis,” said Juan Diaz Redondo, General Manager of Incyte Biosciences Iberia.
Dr. Juan Luis Steegmann, hematologist at the Hospital Universitario de la Princesa (Madrid) and President of the Chronic Myeloid Leukemia Group of the Spanish Hematology Society ( GELMC-SEHH), commented, “The availability of Iclusig is a significant advance for the treatment of spanish patients with leukemias such as CML and Ph+ ALL, especially in those resistant or intolerant to other treatments who, until now, had few treatment options to improve their chances of survival.”

About Chronic myeloid leukemia (CML)
Chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) is a neoplastic disease characterized by an excessive proliferation of myeloid cells at all stages of maturation. It is distinguished by the presence of a reciprocal translocation between chromosomes 9 and 22, which produces the Philadelphia chromosome (Ph). This exchange of genetic material occurs in hematopoietic stem cells and generates an oncogene called BCR-ABL, which is found on the Ph chromosome. Following this exchange, the Ph chromosome encodes an oncoprotein that is a constitutively active form of ABL tyrosine kinase, which promotes cell proliferation and alters cell adhesion and apoptosis.

I am in the process of ruling out associated commitments in joint management with the department of clinical oncology, to determine final behaviour, with as of date, very reserved prognosis.
A surgical medical board is scheduled to meet in mid-July 2017, in order to determine definitive behaviours considering the report of the requested paraclinic extension test.
