El ‘boom’ energético y la sequía dan vida al tren de mercancías

El interés económico del país requiere del continuo y eficiente funcionamiento del ferrocarril. La frase la dijo Franklin D. Roosevelt en un discurso de campaña en 1932, cuando EE UU lidiaba con la Gran Depresión y los camiones se hacían con el negocio del tráfico de mercancías. Pero bien podría aplicarse ahora, cuando la mayor potencia económica del mundo trata de salir del agujero de su recesión más reciente.
En época de Roosevelt, el ferrocarril tenía un serio problema de planificación frente a la creciente competencia del asfalto. Ahora tiene la gran oportunidad para volver a crecer, como ocurre en Brasil, China o México. Hay dos factores que están detrás del renacer de esas potentes locomotoras de gasóleo capaces de tirar de más de un centenar de vagones de mercancías. El primero, el boom energético que se vive en EE UU para explotar sus recursos propios y reducir así su dependencia exterior. El segundo, la dureza de la última sequía, que el pasado verano dejó literalmente secas las grandes autopistas fluviales, como la del imponente río Misisipi. Cientos de barcazas que transportaban cereal y otras materias primas quedaron estancadas en las orillas por la falta de agua suficiente para circular desde el centro del país hacia el golfo de México. El monumental atasco de mercancías se dejó sentir en el crecimiento económico del segundo y tercer trimestre.
Ese auge aún incipiente del ferrocarril lo ven los estadounidenses todos los días en la televisión en un anuncio protagonizado por KITT, el Pontiac Trans Am negro de la popular serie Knight rider (El coche fantástico), que habla con una imponente locomotora de General Electric. Es el reflejo en la vida real de lo que se mueve un sector que vertebra el continente desde el Atlántico hasta el Pacífico y desde Canadá hasta el golfo de México.
Objetivo: llevar grano y petróleo a los puertos del golfo de México
Cargill, uno de los grandes productores de maíz y de soja de la industria agroalimentaria estadounidense, no quiere mirar más al cielo esperando las lluvias y está invirtiendo en nuevas infraestructuras que permitan a los trenes kilométricos operados por la ferroviaria CSX mover el grano desde las granjas hacia los centros de procesamiento en el centro del país y después a los puertos de Luisiana para su exportación al resto del mundo.
Pero lo que realmente está detrás de este resurgir del ferrocarril en EE UU es la producción de energía. El tren va a ayudar a liberar los cuellos de botella que sufren los oleoductos. Un dato para darle dimensión: el pedido de tanques para el transporte de petróleo con fecha de entrega para finales de 2014 equivale a distribuir dos millones de barriles de crudo al día. Es dos veces la capacidad del controvertido oleoducto Keystone XL, proyectado para conectar los yacimientos de la provincia canadiense de Alberta con puertos del golfo de México.
La Asociación Estadounidense del Ferrocarril calcula que en 2012 se movieron más de 200.000 tanques de petróleo, comparados con los 66.000 del año anterior. El lobby ferroviario afirma que es un medio cada vez más eficiente. Cada uno de estos tanques tiene capacidad para 762 barriles de crudo. Burlington Northem Santa Fe (BNSF), la compañía controlada por Warren Buffett, espera aumentar en un 40% el transporte de crudo este año. BNSF contempla gastar unos 200 millones este año para mejorar el acceso a las refinerías desde Dakota del Norte. Berkshire Hathaway, el brazo financiero de Buffett, compró la compañía hace tres años por 26.500 millones. No es el único inversor que apuesta por el futuro del ferrocarril. The country’s economic interest requires the continuous, efficient operation of the railroads. That is what Franklin D. Roosevelt said in a 1932 campaign speech, when the United States was battling the Great Depression and trucks were taking over the freight business. But it could also be applied to today, when the world’s biggest economic power is attempting to crawl out of the hole of its most recent recession.
In Roosevelt’s time, the railroad had a serious planning problem facing the growing competition of asphalt. Now it has the great opportunity to grow again, just as it is in Brazil, China and Mexico. There are two factors behind the revival of those powerful diesel locomotives capable of pulling more than one hundred freight cars. The first is the energy boom taking place in the US to exploit its own resources and thus reduce its external dependence. The second is the severity of the latest drought that literally left the great rivers dry last summer, like the imposing Mississippi River. Hundreds of barges transporting cereal and other raw materials were stuck on the riverbanks due to the lack of sufficient water to circulate from the middle of the country to the Gulf of Mexico. The monumental backlog of goods was felt in the second and third semester economic growth.
Americans see the still-emerging railroad boom every day on television in an advertisement starring KITT, the black Pontiac Trans Am from the popular series Knight Rider, speaking with an imposing General Electric locomotive. It is a reflection in real life of what moves forward a sector that connects the continent from the Atlantic to the Pacific and from Canada to the Gulf of Mexico.
Objective: Carry Grain and Petroleum to Gulf of Mexico Ports
Cargill, one of the big corn and soy producers in the United States food and agriculture industry, does not want to sit idly by any longer and is investing in new infrastructures that allow kilometric trains operated by the CSX rail network to move grain from farms to processing centers in the middle of the country and later to the ports of Louisiana to be exported to the rest of the world.
But what really is behind this train resurgence in the US is energy production. The train is going to help clear the bottlenecks that plague the pipelines. Here is some information to put it into scale: The demand for oil tankers set to deliver by the end of 2014 is equivalent to distributing two million barrels of crude oil a day. That is two times the capacity of the controversial Keystone XL pipeline, projected to connect the oilfields in the Canadian province of Alberta with ports in the Gulf of Mexico.
The United States Railway Association calculates that in 2012 more than 200,000 oil tankers were moved, compared with 66,000 the previous year. The railroad lobby affirms that it is an increasingly efficient means. Each one of these tankers has the capacity for 762 barrels of crude oil. Carl Icahn also sees it as a good opportunity, although in his case the freight car manufacturers are what interest him.
American Railcar, 56% of which is controlled by Icahn, just pitched a new offer for Greenbier, another one of the big companies in the sector. With that transaction it will surpass Trinity Industries, the current leader. Buffett also controls a portion of Union Tank Car capital. He was one of the few that saw this goldmine, which had been considered practically extinct when the economic crisis began to rear its ugly head five years ago.
