I'd give it to my two daughters...

Send half to my daughter for her birthday next week and spend the rest on whatever I happened to be needing at the time.

Depends on the time Sep 17, 2017

Right now, it would be very useful to pay my rent, since what I have in my bank account is USD 300 short for the rest of the month.
In a regular situation, it would probably go to the savings account.

Nothing to do with work

I'd get all of my immediate family together and have a great meal. There'd be plenty left over because it doesn't cost an arm and a leg to eat out in Japan. I'd then buy my granddaughter a lovely, little present and some ski wear since she's absolutely adorable and I'll be taking her skiing this coming season and I don't want to let her get cold. There'd still be money left over for lots of hand warmers to keep her little pinkies warm on the slopes.... See more

Spending on my family would not be frivolous.

A few percents of an annual income, one or two months of rent expenses...
Since I am not in financial discomfort, this amount is not enough for anything substantial worth mentioning and even less life-changing. I probably couldn't even have the bathroom redone to my liking.
If I had debt, I'd pay back.
So I'd probably spend it frivolously, like one WE with the family...

Water Sep 17, 2017

When I get some kind of windfall, I pretty much always pass at least part of it on. I like to envision everyone in the world having clean water, at the very least, so I'd send $100 to Solidarités International, Charity:water, or WaterAid, charities that specialize in WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene). The rest I'd use to work on my house.

In my part of the wold it's not such a big amount, and it would not have a strong impact on my finances - especially since the taxman will claim 42%.

Some in my savings account, pay off some debts, go to a nice restaurant, buy some things to improve my home, a little bit of this and a little bit of that.

what's this got to do with translation? Sep 17, 2017

If it's an unexpected sum of money, it's not earnings which go towards the boring stuff like groceries and bills.

Last time I had a windfall (inheritance) I finished paying off the mortgage, so I reckon this time I deserve to award myself a little treat, like a weekend in Barcelona.

or sign up for some kind of course that would seem extravagant normally

Not enough Sep 17, 2017

1000 is not enough to make any plans...

The car needs serviced and the insurance is due next month, so that would eat up most of the windfall...

If there is anything left, we could have a weekend somewhere not too far away.
