Ok, I have found it. It's a bit hidden away in the form of a small button in the upper right corner. The text Open StarTransit Package appears if you hover with the mouse over the button.

Hi Peter,

Go to Options, then "File", then "File Types" and select "Transit bilingual options".
Then go the Projects view and in the upper right corner you have to select Open StarTransit Package.

It works, I did use this function myself in the past, but it has its limitations (reference material etc.). It is not ideal, but it works.

Either you need an income, in which case it looks like it's high time to start thinking out of the box - which would not include working pro-bono translations (as DEFINITELY not of any use nowadays: what's the point of working for free so that later you can work for peanuts??)

or

you don't need the income - in which case working pro-bono translation is ALSO of no use. Choosing a book you like and translating it is in my view a far better option: YOU decide what to translate AND you might even be lucky to get some royalties and / or recognition as literary translator.

My 2 cents.

This happens to be a Forbes article, and I am a subscriber of Forbes. I realized only lately that the only way I can share a complete article with others is to cut and paste it, the old-fashioned way. This is a long one.

Summary
Brain health, encompassing cognitive, emotional, and physical well-being, is a critical global priority, highlighted at events like the UN General Assembly. While numerous factors contribute, human connection is profoundly impactful. Frequent social interaction significantly improves learning, memory, and overall cognitive function, reducing decline. Maintaining strong friendships is vital, as isolation negatively affects memory and emotional regulation, while secure bonds reduce stress. Fostering social support and building diverse social networks are crucial, demonstrably lowering dementia risk and enhancing social cognition. Additionally, spending time in nature and stimulating indoor environments positively impacts brain activity, mental health, and feelings of belonging. Embracing human connection is paramount for optimal brain health amidst modern challenges.

Brain health is critically important today for individuals, teams, leaders and organizations. And as world leaders gather for the 81st session of the UN General Assembly, brain capital is a focus; including adjacent activities from Brain Days sponsored by the European Brain Council to the Global Brain Economy Summit and more.

Brain health is both the capability and the wellbeing of the brain allowing us to relate to each other, make meaningful contributions to society and to adapt throughout our lives. With healthy brains, we can think better and enhance our productivity, but we can also relate better, manage our emotions, adapt to social challenges and demonstrate resilience. It’s about all kinds of wellbeing encompassing physical, cognitive and emotional health.

Brain Health and Connection
Our brains evolve throughout our lives and there are plenty of factors that contribute powerfully to brain health from prenatal conditions to sleep, nutrition, exercise, environment and so much more.

But one of the most compelling elements of brain health is related to our connection and social support. The research is fascinating and it speaks to pragmatic implications and strategies for enhancing relationships and community.

1. Connect Frequently
One of the ways to build your brain health is to connect frequently with others because it is linked with learning, memory, executive function, processing speed and overall cognitive function.
In a study published in the Archives of Gerontology and Geriatrics, when study participants had contact with others four times a week, compared with once per week, they had improved hippocampal volume. And the volume of the hippocampus is linked with learning and memory as well as executive function and processing speed. In the study, living with others made a difference as well as the quality of social networks.

Another study published in the Journal of the International Neuropsychological Society found that more social activity was associated with overall cognitive function. In fact, when people were more socially active, the rate of their cognitive decline was reduced by 70%.

Implication: Stay in touch with friends and colleagues. Initiate coffee, conversation and opportunities to connect.

2. Find and Maintain Friendships
Another way to keep your brain healthy with connection is to maintain and sustain friendships. Because connecting with friends is linked with cognitive function, memory, processing speed, executive function, stress and emotional regulation.
In a study of 1,400 people over six years published in eLife, those who were more socially isolated demonstrated poorer cognitive function including memory, processing speed and executive function. These diminished capacities were the result of reduced hippocampal volume and reduced cortical thickness. In addition, those who had only one friend versus three of four friends had impacts that were comparable to a year of hippocampal aging.

Another way to affect your brain health is with strong bonds with others. In a meta-analysis of 37 studies including over 2,000 people published in Brain Sciences, when people had stronger attachments to others, they had less stress and better emotional regulation based on effects to the autonomic nervous system, brain activity and biochemistry. And in a study published in Social Cognitive and Affective Neuroscience, those with secure connections with others experienced reduced stress and anxiety based on reduced threat-activated amygdala activation.

Implication: Seek friendship and maintain friendships. Look for friends especially based on the pillars of friendship which include factors like common interests and shared values. Spend time with friends sharing, listening and empathizing.

3. Foster Social Support
You’ll also build your brain health if you build your social network and social support which have been linked with reduced risk of dementia.

A meta-analysis of 33 studies including 2.3 million people published in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease found that dementia risk increased 59% when people had poor social network and it increased 28% with poor social support. On the other hand, a 10-year longitudinal study found that greater social engagement was associated with a significant reduction in dementia risk.

In addition, a meta-analysis of over 600,000 people in 21 longitudinal studies published in Nature found that when people were lonely, they had a 31% higher risk of all-cause dementia.

Implication: Build social support by asking for help and offering it. We thrive with reciprocity in which we both receive and can offer help to others. Find opportunities to volunteer for a cause you care about or offer to take a walk with your elderly neighbor. Also seek help when you need it. Rather than experiencing requests for assistance as burdens, most people appreciate the opportunity to contribute to others’ wellbeing.

4. Build Your Social Network
We also build brain health when we feel more connected to others in groups. The effect of integration with social networks has been correlated with improved memory, better social cognition and better bonding and cooperation.

In a study of over 16,000 people, those who were the most integrated in multiple relationships like marriage, friendship, volunteer activities and neighborhoods, they experienced half the memory decline compared with those who were least involved, according to research published in the American Journal of Public Health.

In another study, when people had social networks that were larger and more complex, they had greater amygdala volume which affected their ability to read social cues, determine what was most important to pay attention to, understand social situations, manage their emotions and learn, according to research published in the journal Nature. A study in the Journal of Neuroscience found these kinds of social networks contributed to greater amygdala volume, but also the amygdala’s connection to the parts of the brain that help us understand social cues and that help us form bonds, connect and cooperate with others.

Implication: Get to know people in groups. Join an association, work together as a team, invite others to socialize as a group. When you do, you get the benefit of the group’s energy. You also have the chance to build relationships with multiple people in one activity and to learn social dynamics between and among people.

5. Spend Time in Nature and Stimulating Environments
Another especially interesting way to build connections and brain health is to spend time in nature as well as in stimulating interior environments. These tend to positively impact brain activity, cognitive function, resilience and mental health as well as belonging and connectedness. They also affect blood pressure and sleep.

Studies published in published in both Scientific Reports and the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health found that spending more time in nature improves blood pressure, sleep and mental health, but also brain activity and cognitive function.

In addition, time in nature can also reduce loneliness and increase belonging and connectedness with others, based on a meta-analysis of 38 studies published in Landscape and Urban Planning. In another study published by Cardiff University, when people did a search-oriented activity in nature rather than an office environment, they reported greater connectedness with others.

You can also boost your brain health by spending time in stimulating indoor environments. In fact, places that were more spacious and that had greater spatial novelty (think: multi-level homes) made a difference as well as when people used different rooms for different activities, moved more within the space and varied their routines. All of this led to better cognitive function and improved mental health based on a study published in International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health.

Implication: Get outside and seek positive environments inside as well. When you spend time in nature, you’ll get a greater sense of perspective which can enhance your ability to get out of your own head, empathize and feel connected with others. Seek interesting indoor environments by going to museums, art galleries or well-designed work environments; or by enhancing your home environment by shifting the way you use the space or enhancing it with art, music or color.

Embrace Brain Health
As we’re challenged with the speed of change, overwhelm, stress and increasing cognitive surrender to AI, brain health will continue to be a critical priority. And among all the ways to enhance brain health, human connection is among the most compelling and impactful.

I'm sorry if this sounds harsh, José, but by doing this, you're damaging the market even more. Just imagine a painter who can't get enough jobs, for example. Would he then start working for free just because he likes painting?
Or a dentist who treats anyone for free? (I'm not talking about the occasional free treatment for someone who can't afford necessary dental care.)
Translation is demanding and not just a hobby.
By the way, I assume that you still need to earn a living. So where does the money come from?

At least many translators who started in the 2000s enjoyed the rewards of their hard work and earned a very good living from translation. They also had the opportunity to build a solid base of direct clients.

For us newcomers, especially in the age of AI and after COVID-19, things are much more difficult. Many of us are turning to AI annotation, while MTPE opportunities are still relatively limited because there is already a scarcity of work in traditional translation.

We are now caught between AI, the need for strong marketing, and increasingly demanding competence requirements.

Good luck to all of us. We have to adapt to these new realities if we want to survive and build sustainable careers in this profession.

You're right! I love Madeiran accent, mostly because it reminds me of my Mother. It’s quite melodic, starts on a lower pitch and rises toward the end of sentences. Over the years, mostly because of the TV influence, Madeiran accent is not so heavy as it was years ago. Yet, in some villages you need to train your ear to understand what’s being said; moreover, in Madeira they still use words that have fallen out of use in mainland Portugal.

That is not really an argument against the beauty of a language. 😊
Every language can produce funny or unfortunate associations when its words or names are heard through the phonetic system of another language. That is simply a matter of sound coincidence.
For example, the name of the famous Soviet/Russian ballerina Irina Kolpakova can sound rather amusing to a Portuguese speaker, something like “urina para a cova” (“urine for the grave”).
I could therefore use the same kind of argument to make Russian names sound ridiculous to Portuguese speakers, but that would obviously tell us nothing about the beauty of Russian.
The same applies to “J'ai perdu mon pantalon”. If it happens to resemble something funny in Russian, that is an amusing coincidence between two languages, not a linguistic argument against French. 😊

So you're complaining about a lack of work, yet now you want to work for free? I don't understand.
Put your energy into thinking of new business opportunities, improving your skills, contacting new clients, or doing whatever helps you, but don't advertise your work for free. It doesn't make sense at all.

I studied Latin and a bit of Greek, and I absolutely loved it. It is sometimes said that Latin is the maths of languages because it is so structured and logical.
On the other hand, I have always been fascinated by Hebrew, Arabic and Aramaic.
That doesn’t make them “the loveliest languages”, of course. It simply means that, to my ear, they have something special.
Perhaps that is the point: we don’t necessarily have to agree on which language is the loveliest. We can simply have languages whose sounds we are drawn to for reasons that may be deeply personal.
Lastly, I also love the sound of Portuguese as spoken in African Portuguese-speaking countries. It has a rhythm and musicality that I find particularly beautiful.
Some languages simply speak to us in different ways. 🙂
