Source text - Russian
Translation - English On the field of Kulikovo, Part 1
The river stretches out, grieving, makes its weary way,
Its margins washing clean.
Above the rising banks of meagre yellow clay,
Grieving haystacks lean.
Oh, Rus’ of mine! My bride! Oh, all too clearly
Our road will give no rest.
Our road, a bolt of Tatar's wild and ancient fury,
Has pierced our own breast.
Our road - across the steppe - in heartache unrelenting,
Your heartache, oh, Rus’!
But fear of the night beyond the border crossing
I will refuse.
Come, night. We'll gallop on and with our fires irradiate
The vast, open plain.
Through smoke upon the plain our holy flag will coruscate,
And cold steel of the Khan ...
And ceaseless fight! True peace is but for dreams yet,
Through blood and dust we pass,
She flies on and on, the wild mare of the wild steppe,
Trampling feather-grass ...
No end in sight! Milestones, escarpments flicker-
Halt, will you, halt!
The clouds show their fear, they gather closer, thicker,
The sun sets in blood.
Sunset in blood! My heart bleeds like a river,
Weep, my heart, weep…
No rest, no rest! Headlong, she gallops ever -
The wild mare of the steppe.

Source text - Russian
Translation - English On the field of Kulikovo, Part 3
At night, when Mamai brought his horde to
The bridges, and steppe below,
On the darkened field I stood beside you -
Oh, did you not know?
In the fields, the deepest night now falling,
Ahead the baleful Don,
In my knowing heart I heard you calling
In the crying swan.
Like a storm cloud, rising after midnight
Came the Prince's host,
And, afar off, clinging to a stirrup tight,
A mother's keening voice.
And, describing circles, birds unsleeping
Soared far off, on high,
While o'er Rus and o'er her prince watch keeping,
Lightning lit the sky.
Eagles, screaming o'er the Tatar's marshalled ranks,
Threats of anguish railed,
While Nepryadva hid with fog her gentle banks,
Like a princess veiled.
And with fog the still Nepryadva lining,
For me, straight as a bolt,
You came, in robes that set the air all shining,
Unstartled stood my colt.
For your friend you blazed, a wave of silver
On my sharpened blade,
Dusted off and polished up the hauberk
On my shoulder laid.
And when in the morning marched the Tatar bands,
Like a cloud of night,
In my shield your face, not forged by human hands,
Shone forever bright.
Russian to English: Щелкунчик. General field: Art/Literary Detailed field: Music
Source text - Russian
Глядя в пол, как в пустой колодец;
Translation - English The Nutcracker
A scary fairytale
You are crossing the very last “t”,
You’ve threaded your tale in the moonlight
The ending - you made it happy,
So that children won’t cry in the dark night ...
... Only someone will spill a candle
And a dozen lines will be whitewashed:
There are those who have a good handle
On what happened ... what the truth was ...
And another’s hands the quill will capture,
Claiming for themselves the lawful option
To tell another’s tale of pain and torment,
Pouring in a dose of truth’s sharp poison
The gates of hell will open just a fraction,
Trampling horses put the saints in traction,
And for the well-known story, a new section,
Drawn in shades of grey, and cold and leaden
You stare down from the mantel shelf
Like the floor is an empty well
A glass fragment reflects your own self:
You’re a clown ... or a soul from hell
In the shade of a Christmas fir tree,
Of disdainful scorn you’re the sad butt
Your job is simple - now what might that be?
To help a child crack open a walnut
Time was you were every maiden's delight,
Time was you were royal, a prince so dashing
You owe it to the rats, all full of grey spite,
That you have taken such a fearful thrashing
Damned to blazes by the evil rat Queen,
Fated to become a toy forever,
Looking without feeling - anger or pain -
Through tired eyelids open just a sliver
Quiet movements, heard after midnight,
Freeze the blood, make the family afraid,
From its lair far from the sunlight
Comes a memory, like an unruly housemaid,
Bringing plates piled up high and high
With foreboding and grey spitefulness,
Leaving you not a chance to deny
How it will be - simple hopelessness
That is why from up the midnight tower
New Year bells with sly intent are ringing
Nobody will help in your dark hour
After all a toy is just a dumb thing
No point hoping for a great salvation
None will run to help in your distress
Feel your body tight with desperation—
In the night she died—your lovely princess ...
You're all chewed up and bashed and broken
You're plastered with blood and whitewash …
The rats remember, Oh Master Hoffman,
What really happened ... what the truth was ...

Source text - Russian
Translation - English exactly how a leaf trembles up on high,
inaccessible in its simplicity,
we shall never grasp, nor catch, nor see,
and nothing like it shall we ever be
but it may be that having left this world behind,
we to the sky shall rise, and in the winter wind
our jailer in like manner our souls to branches will bind,
and we shall dream of once more being human

Source text - Russian
Translation - English An Autumn Roundelay
I walked a woodland path
All carpeted with leaves,
The air was growing cool,
But I unfeeling;
On and on my soul,
On went my weary soul,
Imprisoned long ago
In darkness, kneeling
Peaceful quietness
Ruled the air around me
But thoughts of her alone
Broke down my heart, and found me
I make for the hill,
Alone and in dismay
Where are you now?
Close by, or far away?
My faithful mare
In silence at my side,
Sharing with me ever
My happiness and grief
So cold the rain,
A laughing, playful breeze
Spun round my load of sadness—
An autumn roundelay
A dreary time of waste,
Her coronet she weaves,
Yes, autumn makes no haste,
But chokes the world with leaves
Of you I found no trace,
No footprint on the way
Oh, how will I find you?
I'll search 'til my last day ...
Where are you now?
Close by, or far away?

adhering to the principles of professional translation.
I have passed two parts of the three-part Chartered
Institute of Linguists Diploma in Translation: General (passed with

I have an MA in Classics from Corpus Christi
College Cambridge, the core elements of which were literature, history, and

To support my translation business, and to ensure that my
language skills are constantly improving, I immerse myself in reading,
studying, speaking and listening to Russian. I have a network of friends and
associates in Russia who support me in this, and in my business. I spend about two months each year in Russia.
