Influenced by "Tiger mother"? Apr 29, 2011

My initial thought was, what Chinese woman in her right mind would like to be compared to a female tiger?

A couple of months ago, I accidentally tuned into the program of this woman professor being interviewed by Charlie Rose. My impression of her wasn't that favorable, 'cause I felt she was feeding into an old stereotype about Chinese Americans that wasn't necessarily true. She was very proud of the strict parenting she prescribed for her kids, since it may have worked for her. But IMO, her methods were suffocating, and in general unhealthy for a child's growth and upbringing.

Yueyin,

I agree. Of course parents play an important role in a child's education. But a good amount of credit should be given to society as a whole and the individual's own effort.

The funny thing is the only person who says it's okay is an old Asian man.

That's why I completely disagree with Amy Chua's generalization, or stereotype of the so-called "Tiger Mother". According to her Wikipedia page, her parents were ethnic Chinese from the Philippines. While I'm not familiar with that part of the world, this kind of parenting was definitely not the norm in Mainland China, at least while I was living there. It really borders on child abuse, as one of the bystander women aptly put.

Just one step away May 14, 2011

I remember the news that a Chinese immigrant slapped his little daughter on her face in a park just because she lost her necklace, not expensive though. Someone nearby immediately called the police and the man was arrested as soon as a police officer arrived. His daughter was put in custody of a social worker. In the end, the man agreed to be deported back to China with his entire family to avoid child abuse charges that could be pressed against him, and to reunite with his daughter.

Steve,

"A Surprise in Texas" is also a surprise in Colorado! I bought the DVD, A Surprise in Texas - The 13th Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, for Helen, but just got a chance to watch it. It is really a big surprise to me that Nobuyuki Tsujii, the First Prize co-winner, was born blind! He is really a talented pianist and composer! I was deeply moved by his performance. It is so true: where there’s a will, there’s a way!

Nobuyuki Tsujii (born September 13, 1988) is a Japanese pianist and composer who shared the First Prize at the Thirteenth Van Cliburn International Piano Competition in 2009 in a tie with co-winner Haochen Zhang of China.

Nobuyuki Tsujii was born blind but was gifted with a talent for music. At the age of two, he began to play Jingle Bells on a toy piano after his mother had been humming the tune. He began his formal study of piano at the age of four.

Talent May 15, 2011

Yueyin,

Indeed. All the contestants featured in the program were impressive. But the young Japanese man was particularly so.

A neighbor boy we had in China was also born blind. The kid played a mean harmonica. He had extremely keen hearing that compensated for his blindness.

May 16, 2011

Steve,
